sr20 manual gearbox options
« on: Jan 29, 2013, 04:52PM »
i know there i info scatered across diferent threads about this, thought we could put them in one thread. i am asking the question as i think it maybe a more viable option now that my 've' has a 't' and cost of repairing the cvt transmission is about the same as a manual, and i am pretty sure it want last long anyway.
I have been looking around and only found a non lsd think from an n13.

50's series sr20 bellhousing (Dozer may be able to help in NZ) KA gear set and outer casing. Stock KA mounts and driveshafts. KA LSD box can also be used with sr bellhousing.

Sr bellhousing will need to machined to fit but its the best option. Pulsar st box will not hold up with the power, also with pulsar box need to fit cable clutch instead of hydraulic.

Any clue if you can use 6 speed maxima internals with KA LSD housing ?

ok thanks.
i have also been looking at the sr16ve lsd box shafts shouldnt be an issue now after dealing with the cvt ones. it bolts on,
I have been looking into the p12housing, 02-03 maxima 6speed hlsd box since i started the swap. theres now agreat write up on it here
not sure if it can be read without loging in
http://www.sr20-forum.com/howto-s/64081-ultimate-6-speed-swap-thread-parts-instructions-results.html

now just the feasibility and time and cost of them all,

Kranzy, is the main reason for the ka internals strength? or engine mount.

Strenght, standard driveshafts, lsd.

50's series box for mounts, keeping stock clutch setup (hydraulic) You will need to find a slave cylinder that will work, gtir might, not sure mine was attached to the bellhousing i got from NZ.

Using a U12 awd flywheel, with a bit of machining the inside of the bellhousing you can use a skyline clutch kit. I did this not long before I started using the work ute, and massive difference. Well worth it. You will also need an awd starter motor.

seems the sr16 isn't the way to go, its a 30 series and have been informed 3rd gear usually are hand grenades above 140-150kw. 50 series it is then , i have contacted the guy i got my cams through as he apparently has a few. i read your project thread with the flywheel etc. ve has totally different starter.

KA box casing is designed for a 5 speed gearset....so it would be fairly unlikely.

You could however adapt the Maxima 6 speed box bell housing to the KA block.

I havnt looked into it at all, is the Maxima box a 50's series? Could you use the KA Bellhousing/SR Bellhousing (50's Series) with the Maxima gearset/outer casing? That might work, however you would need to confirm that maxima/u12 driveshafts are interchangeable otherwise you'll need custom shafts with maxima inners and ka outers.

the issue really is finding a manual maxima box in oz. the ve guys in the states use them but all the ones here are auto. i have an awesome cv guy on the coast who can sort shafts out. AAA cv shafts.
the other thing i was looking into is "PHANTOM GRIP' lsd setups
Quote
How Does the Phantom Grip Work?
Phantom Grip's precision cut disc plates function as a disc-type limited slip in cornering and braking. Disc plates exert equal load against spider gears using spring pressure to control the amount of slippage at the wheels. Helping to accelerate quicker, while sustaining higher speeds through corners.
Phantom Grip offers 100% locking in hard acceleration. When torque is applied through acceleration the disc plates pivot, locking the spider gears, causing both wheels to exert equal power to the road, providing less torque steer than an ordinary differential. Although seemingly simple, the 'Phantom Grip design' offers as much maximum traction as other limited slips.
http://www.phantomgrip.com/

apparently there about $200-300 and are pretty straight forward to install if you have pulled apart a box before.
*edit*
just found this

i will hassle you for further details about this when i hear back about the box. ;D

Hmm, I have a spare perfect working 50v box,

Perhaps I should get that rebuilt with a phantom grip LSD (or other) with a ca20 final drive.....

I *was* going to use a phantom grip lsd insert....and decided against it.

A proper Quaife mechanical LSD for the 50A/V maxima box is around the $900 mark from Quaife UK. It is a proper LSD, unlike the phantom grip which is, well only effective in a straight line.

If you are building a drag car, go nuts and use the phantom grip, otherwise if you want to get power down in corners and have a stable car under braking on the track, go with a proper mechanical lsd.

I know that the 5 speed maxima box is the same as the KA U12 5 speed, with the exception of the bellhousing. I'd be inclined to think that the 6 speed may be a little different, and a lot more rare!

mfactory (http://www.teammfactory.com/home) are looking at making a  Custom MFactory Helical & Plate LSD's and Gears for RS5F32A/V gearbox. I have queried about 50 & 70 series, yet to get reply.
 It was offered here

I have looked into this as well. Pulsar guys who have SR20's reckon that the 70 series box is the best unless you get customer gearsets with the 32 series. I have a 32 series. If I blow one up I'm looking at a 70 series box. They are about 1800 shipped to Australia. They use N16 std manual internals.

I don't know how hard it is to fit a 50 series but if Kranzy has done it then it can be done. Would think you would need cv shafts?

the n16 internals are 70 series but not sure on ratios. The b15 & g20 70 series both have different ratios.
