U13 dies randomly
« on: Mar 5, 2012, 07:50PM »
So my 1996 U13 with 225k kms on it has started to die randomly. 4 times in one day.
First thought it was a lose wire to amps but that has been fixed and car continues to die on me whilst driving.
I'll be driving along and for about 5-10s feel like engine is going to stall but runs then all power goes and engine turns off.
Its either started again it self or needed a jump start.
so far ive had the dizzy cap and rotor replace as they were fucked, the battery voltage is good and stable, plugs are ok not great

so internets any ideas ??

Not oil on the metal disk inside the dizzy?

Whenever mine had oil in there it would start hesitating, then eventually stall and often not re-start.

Cleaning the disk and drilling 3 holes in the bottom of the dizzy for the oil to drain out has lasted a good 30,000km so far with no more stalls! :) Mine has 200,000 on it and its the original dizzy as far as I know.

Leads? One of mine had a crack in it, hair-line and was arcing to the cylinder head.

That caused hesitation, but never a complete stall however.

But yeah, other than that... the big 3, air, spark, fuel... maybe its a fuel issue or airflow meter?

Also, check the coolant temp sensor, check its resistance and clean the terminals on it and the plug.

Apart from trying what’s already mentioned -

I had a similar issue a while ago and it turned out the alarm/immobiliser module was knackered, so when it got a little hot it would just cut out, sometimes it would start and sometimes it wouldn’t.

It also did it another time but that was when the battery was buggered, but you've already knocked that off the list.

Hopefully you can find the issue soon!
Cheers

did you find the problem as mine is doing exactly the same thing. A CAS fault registered on the ECU and I replaced the dizzy the car ran for about a week or so fine as can be then started doing exactly the same thing again.

It was the dizzy. First mob that looked at car didnt check the seals on the dizzy
Got another mob to check over whole engine and they combined 2 dizzys into 1 working unit.
Runs fine now
Its the KA weak point in my opinion.
