Exhaust System + Cannon Question.
« on: Sep 5, 2008, 02:10PM »
Hey guys im new to the forum.
names chris. from vic

I recently brought a pintara(1991), automatic
I've just put one a set of extractors.
now im looking for a good exhaust system size.
I was told 2.25".
And Im also looking at buying a 4" or 5" Cannon Muffler.
whats the difference in the 1" size?
im mainly after the sound of the car. just a deep note would be great.

response back would be great :)

im sure there will be no shortage of people telling you that cannon's are basically a cop magnet, unless you have a turbo you can get better sounding mufflers, they wont get you labelled as a hoon or chased by the cops as often either ;)

No difference; well there might be at 1100+hp.

Might want to look at a 2.5" extractor back system instead of 2.25".

After i got the extractors,
the guy who did it said 2.5" system would be too big and i wouldnt get enough backpressure.
is there a huge price difference?

2.25" will cost me about $250 tops.

small amount of backpressure will actually help you out, the price shouldn't be too much more if you decide to go 2.5"

wrong.

go 2.5, you'll regret it if you go 2.25 then wish you went 2.5, plus, straight pipes sound better on 2.5 :P

the thicker walls of the cannon should get you a deeper note, so a cheaper cannon will use a thinner gauge, (i am sure that pringles could confirm this or other brass instrument players) if that makes sense. 4" will be the one to get with the 2.5 previously stated...

allright i'll get a 2.5" system.
will there be a sound loss with a 4" to 5" cannon size?
and would anyone be selling a good quality cannon?

To be honest a cannon will give you a very droney sound, i had a cannon on my ka and it wasnt long before i changed to a lukey style straight through muffler. Was a bit quieter on idle and highway driving, but when i opened it up it sounded awesome.

Its personal preference though.

I had a 2.5" system with a cannon, it was okkkk...

I went 3" with a hotdog magnaflow muffler and it sounded 10 times better.

i'll probably go 2.25"
i'll have a look at the magnaflow muffler.
i just want sound not performance.

if you want sound i just went for a 4 1/2"  tip cannon they sound great
only downside is the cops pulled me over searching my engine bay for a turbo  :-[

I'll stick by the cannon because mine sounded soooo tough. Lumpy as all hell, real deep and no droneyness (is that a word?  ::))

But I had the exhaust done from the engine back. If you just tack a cannon on the end I'm not sure...
