My dodgy car, Pt2. Diagnose my misfiring!
« on: Nov 6, 2007, 11:28AM »
Now with video! This is me free-revving it after it started misfiring while driving :( AGAIN.

http://rapidshare.com/files/67733183/06112007012.mp4

(.mp4 file off my phone, you can open it with Media Player Classic if nothing else on your PC works)

My car is/has:
- May '95 5sp Manual KA24DE
- Idle set at 1000RPM (hot)
- Free-revving in video in neutral, clutch in/out makes no difference. When driving, the car goes jerky and horrible when it misfires.
- New spark plug leads (Bosch)
- New spark plugs (NGK)
- New alternator
- Newish fuel pump (Walbro, 4mth old)
- Newish starter motor (OEM, 6mth old)
- New distributor rotor
- New distributor oil seals

Please help, I'm at my wit's end :(

Now with youtube link, so you don't have to download crap!

Have you done the diagnostics yet? If so, which error code is it throwing out?

Change over to a known good distributor, and see if that helps.

btw i just had a look at the video and to me that doesnt look like misfiring. correct me if im wrong, but when u misfire it starts popping and mine sounded like a wrx

can u take another video when its misfiring but try to get the sound of the engine or exhaust

ur tacho is dropping suddenly which means the engine is losing revs (hence power). check ur afm and fuel filter as well. a car basically needs air, fuel and spark so look at the basic things u can before u start buying random parts

Yeah thats right, when mine was misfiring it pops and lurches kinda thing, but the tacho didnt show dramatic changes...

Hmm, maybe 'misfiring' is the wrong term. It lurches when this happens in gear - revs die then jump back up. There are no pops, bangs or anything though.

When you free-rev it and the tacho goes crazy, the revs are fine - they fall as if you'd just gotten off the gas.

yeah when u say revs die i think its more than just a simple misfire unless more than 1 cylinder is misfiring. check ur fuel system (try changing fuel filter) and check the afm (how i dont know lol...)

Ooh-ee, the mechanic confirmed that the CPS in the distributor is going dodgy.

Thankfully, I can get a brand new dizzy for $220, so I can get that fitted and timing checked over the weekend.  :)

Nice work!
$220 for a new dizzy is damn cheap... Where abouts did you source it from for that price?

From a parts recycler/importer called Just Japanese (not JustJap), in western Sydney. I was stoked at that price :)

Getting a new ignition coil from Bursons today just to ensure that the whole ignition system is new and that there'll be no more problems. :D
