changing your oil filter
« on: Mar 21, 2006, 02:29PM »
has anyone tried changing the filter on a U13 attesa.

do they expect you to rip half the damn motor apart to get at it  ;D

i wasnt sure if there was a right or wrong way to do it.

you dont have to rip the car apart to change your oil filter....

is it located up high on the engine near the brake master cylinder or down low under the intake manifold??

mine is located high and as long as the car is reasonably cool, it is a piece of piss to get out, and sandpaper helps to get a grip on it, coz of its dud local

It meant to be accessed from underneth. Put the front on stands and crawl under.

yes thats how you do it on a KA, or a GTiR but on U12's and U13s they also have it high in the engine bay and can only be accessed from above

in fact. here is a pic, the yellow line points to the filter and its position, and the green line shows the way to get it out

Yep thats it just like the picture.  Use a Ryco Z442 they come out easilly but its a bit tight for a tool so use your hand (sandpaper mentioned above would work well, I tap mine with a hammer and screwdriver to start it turning)

yeah, a hammer would work too, good one john, i never thought of doing that.....

i use a genuine nissan filter, been trying to get a higher flowing filter, but no one makes them
so use either a ryco or nissan, both the same and pretty evenly priced

ehh u can also get filter straps/rachets if they're too tight......another handy tip(doesn't make much difference but is good practice) when you put the new filter in, rub some oil(clean oil) over the seal on the filter, helps stop the seal grabbing(and/or destroying itself) when you put it in

you should also put a little bit in the filter before screwing it on... and when you screw it on, only put it on hand tight (that also help preserve the seal)

the oil filter wrench i found worked the best was about 7 bucks at supercheap.

it's a long bolt with a ( shape at one end and a knob on the other - and there's a nut with a strap coming over end of the ( shape.

By tightening the nut towards the knob, the strap tightens and the filter comes off. Much easier than those turn the handle to tighten the strap jobbies!

Or you can do it the backyard mechanic way and hammer a screwdriver through the filter then use the screwdriver as a lever to twist it off  ;D

Filter on my car (CA18DET) is down under the intake manifold, sunk back a fair way away from the firewall.

Its a bit of a bastard to get too, plus there is this weird little 'sheid' thing under it.  Its supposed to catch the oil that dribbles out of the filter when you remove it and stop it running all over the end of the transfer case and drivers side inner CV.

It doesn't work...

Catches some of the oil, but most of it goes all over the exhaust's flex pipe and the end of the transfer case (which are both RIGHT under the oil-cooler/filter)... and yes, I did drain all the oil out of the car first :P

Picked up the girlfriend from south geelong station earlier this week after changing my oil and filter.  Stopped right at the front, people everywhere... she walks over as smoke pours out of the bonnet scoop ::).  Burning off the exhaust ::)  People were like "your cars on fire mate!".  nah nah, its cool... its just a peice of shit :P  Chels sees it and quickly picks up the pace and gets in, really embarrassed.

She already hates the car, the bloody thing is really digging its own grave.

haha, sounds like fun budgie, i like the position of my filter, no problems with getting covered in oil.

the screwdriver through the filter wont work in this instance, coz there is not enough space around the filter to get one in there and to turn it.
and as for a filter wrench, same as above, it wont fit in there...... your lucky if you can get your hand in there, if i had bigger hands, i'd have no hope.

i hate a fair bit of an issue, i have pretty big hands (amongst other things of course), i put an old tshirt over my arm/hand and reach down the side and take out that way - it does get frustrating because unless i angle and flip it over it means some oil spills down, so it's a bit of task.

i always put some oil in the filter + oil up the seal as mentioned above. not sure on the exact purpose of oiling up the seal, but it can't hurt. oil change typically takes me 45min, most of which is me sitting in the lounge room watching TV and waiting for the oil to all drain out. hotter oil=faster, but also hotter=more burns

haha, yeah phreeky, i have gotten burnt a few times now, not very fun at all.....

i have found that i have to use a tiny bit of sandpaper, and coz its so tight my thumb sits between the filter and head (when hot i have burnt my thumb 5 times now...) the sandpaper helps with some grip on the filter. and if you put some oil on the new seals it helps you get it off. as has been said, finger tight is goodly. generally about 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn from when the seal touches.

as for spilling the oil down when getting it out, hopefully i can remedy this with an oil filter relocate kit, hopefully. until then its take chances and hope not to spill any

Do it with a drip tray underneath the car you pansies :P

The reason for the oil on the seal is to lubricate it when you're tightening the filter so it doesn't grab and twist itself off the filter. I'm not sure if there's a reason for putting oil in the filter but no mechanic I've ever worked with has done that.

i would think it was so there was oil in the system as high up as possible so when you turn the car over theres less time running with minimal oil.

kranzy exactly right, same reason oil filters have anti drain-back valves.......hold some oil in for cold start

Meh... I guess their thinking is it isn't really a cold start and it's only a few seconds every 5000km that it runs semi-dry.

Yeah but if you do that the would suggest it as a safeguard so any damage isnt caused by the filter not having oil...

Dont know if that made sense.

dont think it matters too much as there is residual oil still there that will do for the few seconds till if reaches maximum flow... but what ever
the words "race car" spelled backward still spell "race car"?
