Left Outer CV boot replacement help?
« on: Apr 23, 2011, 03:36PM »
So I've been doing a bit of work on this Corsair here. And i've some up too replacing the outer passenger CV boot as its cracked. It's been letting dust/dirt in but there dose not appear to be damage or play in the joint so im gonna clean it out and re-grease then just fit a new boot.

But this damn Gregory manual for the corsair is an ass-hat and just said "nope"
How the hell do i replace the outer CV boot?
I cant seem to seperate the "spider" from the outer spline assy. The manual shows a 'snap ring' but i cant see a way to get too it, I don't wanna just start pulling things unless i know im pulling the right things.

Cheers.

I was told by a mechanic a while back... pull out the whole shaft, grab a heavy mellot (rubber or plastic) and give it a bash.  The pin will just pop off.  Make sure you inspect it before you put the pin back on.  If you dont have a mellot grab a piece of 2x4 timber and use that.

I've got to do mine at the moment too.

Pin?
I know not of any pin?
I'm beginning to think that i have to separate the inboard joint, remove the boot, remove the balance weight and MABY i can slide the outer boot off that way......?
I'm a front wheel drive rookie so this is all new to me.

you should be able to find boots that stretch over the cv, i seen them in a trade magazine....
or take the axle as a whole to a mechanic/cv specialist, saves on mess too ;)

don't rate mechanics in general. 50% saving money thing and 50% you cant be sure it's done properly unless you do it yourself. 9 out of 10 times, anything i get done to my car dose not reach my expectations of a professional job and i just end up redoing it. As a general rule i do it all myself these days.
Nothing against mechanics in general, I'm sure 90% of them DO have a clue, but 100% of them are driven by time and the confines competitive business and rates put on them. forcing them to do more jobs in a day to keep on-top of things, which in turn causes them to cut corners and rush.

I might end up just separating at the inboard joint and removing the balance weight, then taking the boot off that way.

Lol, Na not really. They just piss me off is all ^.^

** the following is just a winge, feel free to skip XD **

the only thing i had don't to my falcon was the alarms systems install as i wanted it to be warranted under CAM's. cost $750
Over the years i found the following wrong with the install:
Cars instrument cluster would malfunction randomly and do weird shit like left hand blinker on causes right hand blinker to flash and high beams flash... wtf? Tracked it down, a white wire tapped into the clusters earth pulling the pin form it's seating because it had been tied too tight.
took it to get fixed, couple weeks later, problem returns. This time i just fix it myself and don't tell them.
Hidden mode switch broke off, was dodgy super glued in.
was supposed to be black wire job, they terminated it with coloured wires..... wtf?
removed steering column, about 1.5 meters of slack cabling just cable tied dodgy under the dash, sensors held in with only 1 screw. ect ect.
got the column out and they had wired into the wrong side of the ignition..... So a would be thief would simply plug in any suitable ignition and bypass most the alarm system?!?! WTF
Lock actuators not acting at proper angels to the door locks.
in the long run i put more man hours into fixing their fkups then i would have just doing it myself.

I've been back there a few times and have told him that his staff are good blokes and are help full, but their workmanship is rushed and very poor for a CAM's licensed business.

That's just 1 example. It would be rude of me to say i didn't have good experiences. but i just try to avoid it unless its something i cant physically do because of tooling or the like.

It's easy to split a CV, slide the boot back, push the inner part into the CV, put your fingers in there and you can feel a large cir clip type thing...You should be able to un seat it with a screw driver. Then the CV joint will just slide apart

To get a outter cv off, hit it with a hammer/mellot, the snap ring is on the center shaft spline inside the cv, get angry with it!!!
