Help with clutch, do i need to replace?
« on: Feb 20, 2011, 10:09AM »
Hey guys,

I have a U12 corsair with the CA20e engine. Recently, the clutch started to slip at any sign of me putting my foot down more than a couple of centimetres, so I've been having to drive like an old lady for a while  :-[ my question is, do I need to replace my clutch? and if so do i need to remove the whole engine? what do i have to do?

I downloaded the FSM and i couldnt find anything on installation and removal, likewise when i searched the site i couldnt find anything really specific to me.

any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance

Matt

Yep clutch needs to be replaced.

Engine doesnt have to come out, gearbox does.

A very brief run down.

Drain gearbox oil.
Remove driveshafts.
Remove gearbox.
Remove old clutch/pressure plate.
Install new clutch/pressure plate (align clutch plate).
Install new throw out bearing. (comes in clutch kit).
Re-install gearbox and driveshafts.
Put in new gear oil.

Drive happy :)

Yeah that price sounds reasonable. And yeah gearbox needs to come off not engine. You'll have to support the engine and drop the crossmember to gain access to some of the bolts that hold the box to the engine.

Shouldn't you be firing up the bbq :P

Ill fight you. May even throw a bar of soap your way. Maybe a few wax strips and some clip on brembo brake calipers for your fooly sic civic.

Didnt need to take off the cross member here.. Taking off the gearbox and front and rear mounts was enough, while supporting the engine. But you are right, you cant get the two bolts off underneath if you dont do that.

The biggest issue I had was the size of the drive shaft nuts and tension. Would pay to invest in a clutch aligning tool as well.  It saves you ages in trying to mate the box back up.

Yeah, 36mm driveshaft nuts are a bitch. I have specific impact socket for this that I bought.

An imperial size also worked well for me in the past on the end of a rattle gun.

I couldnt find a socket in time, so I just pulled the drive shafts out with the hub and brake disk attached.  >:(  yeah that was a pain in the ass..
