Strange vibration
« on: Jul 26, 2006, 08:47PM »
hey all, my little bro has been having trouble with his 1990 U12 Ti (ka24e). upon starting the car makes a vibrating noise, the source of which seems to be coming from the front right of the car, near the timing chain area. it makes the vibration right through the rev range when it is free revving and when it is coasting or slowing. the only time the noise goes is when it is put under load, not heavy load either, just light acceleration.

i was thinking it might be the harmonic balancer, but im confused :S

Thanx

the engine mount is fine though, it seems all well and good. anything else it could be, i thought if it was the engine mount it would vibrate all the time

when my engine mount was dead it would only vibrate when reversing, cold starts and when engine braking, and a little bit when taking off.
oh what the heck it vibrated all the time, just more when I was reversing, and cold starting.

Have a good look around the engine bay to see if there is anything it may be vibrating against.

lol, thanx for all the advice people. i hadn't taken a look at the car personally until yesterday, so sorry about the misinformation. the drivers side engine mount was completely shot, it had sagged out almost to the top of the mount and wat was left of it was shredding.

but on a positive note it has been replaced and all is good now ... CHEERS

I was going to say... that mount has a habit of looking ok when really it is stuffed. Mine looked fine, but the car vibrated like crazy. I found out that was the problem when I pushed on it and the noise quietened.

Check your rear mount (under the back of your engine) and see if it's broken. It's usually the first one to go, then it takes the rest with it.

I would say engine mount, the reason it is when its cold is probs because the engine is reving a bit higher to warm it up quicker as its supposed to it set up that way. My car vibrates a bit more noticably when cold asmentioned.
