oh yeah GLItimmy the sound waves are absorbed more by softer surfaces espescially foam you will hear it alright it is just the quality i would be worried about sound doesnt like to travel through anything as by hitting something it loses momentum and therefore loses its intensity

i think we all need to go back to physics class!!

i am probably wrong considering i failed every single assessment in yr11 and 12 physics i am so dumb ;D

A good judgement of this is when you HAVE NO BACK SEAT IN A SEDAN BECASUE THE SPEAKER BOX IS THERE!!!!

I didn't HAVE to take the seat out i just did  :D cause as people have said it sounds better and it is louder ;)
Quote
i need the seat down otherwise it goes all muddy cause the air bounces off the back of the seat

i realise the whole sound absorbtion thing, that is not why i need my seat down. its hard to explain in words. but i know what i mean.

sometimes the cone of the sub will hit the back of the seat too.

i'm getting sick of smartare comments in threads too. useless posts/threads will be deleted from now on.

if your sub is hitting the back of the seat every now and then, you could always move it back a couple of cm's?

or a "re box" of the sub making the side the sub is actually mounted into on an angle so its fireing up slightly?

did u make the box yourself or buy it with the sub? need to be careful when buying sub and box packages because often the box is too big for the sub, which will make the cone of the sub move far to much than its designed for due to pressures/air movement etc. inside the box.
its all about volumes ;)

just as thought...

i designed the box to the manufacturer's specs to within 250ml (.25litres) of their recommended size & my dad made it up for me. so i think we did a good job, as its within the size of less than a coke can of their specs. it was a difficult process though, as the required size for my sub using a sealed enclosure is only 27 litres.

the box is angled to match the incline of the back of the seat. its easy enough to pull the seat down. and it only hits the back of the seat when the stereo is excessivly loud, which doesnt happen often. its not a big problem.

what i meant with the whole muffling/muddy sound sometimes occuring, is when the cone is on a positive excursion (moving toward the seat) it pushed air... this air hits the seat, and has to go somewhere, while the sub has made its negative excursion (away from the seat) and is about to begin its next positive excursion, some of the air that originally was belted up against the back of the seat sometimes bounces back off the seat & towards the sub cone again, therefore, while the sub is making a positive excursion, some of the air wants to force it on a negative excursion, therefore, making the note inclomplete/distorted. does that make sense?

In about a month or so i'll be doing something similar to this:

Except i'll be running just one 10", with a fake floor and my spare wheel on top of the floor in a custom box for easier access.

-Sony Xplod 4x52w CD head unit
-Xplod 6.5" 200w 3 way at the rear
-Xplod 6.5" 130w 2-way at the front
-Sony 222w amp.

Puts out real good sound too, but you can't crank it too hard or the speakers distort big time.

I like to carry stuff in my boot when I need to, so for that reason I haven't got a sub yet.

Talking sub enclosures have you tried turning the sub box around so the sub faces towards the tail lights

Uses the whole boot as an enclosure then and i can tell you from personal experience that the bass is a LOT deeper

Try it if you don`t believe me but i`ll hate to say i told you so when you come back on and tell me i`m right

Ohh and if this has already been mentioned on this thread then i apologise as i didn`t read whole thread

i reckon it depends on da subs and whats in the boot. coz with my first sub i ever had (a 10"), it sounded heaps better facing toward the back, but with the two 12s i got now, i cant really tell the diff either way, so i juz face them towards the seats (to avoid damage from objects in the boot n sh!t)

update on my system.

head unit:
clarion dx515

speakers
2 pairs of Focal 165ca 6" coax speakers (in door and in custom parcel shelf)

sub:
focal access line 33a (33cm or 13" sub) in custom 35ltr box (deadened with brown bread and dacron)

amps:
blaupunkt mpa680 amp (4x55W/2x150Wrms - MAX OUTPUT=680W) for my speakers
JBL 180.2 amp for the sub (Output 2 Ohms: 180W x 2) - however cos my rca outs on my head unit are only 2volt, my amp isnt running at its peak.. 4volt is best option to get maximum power out of ya amp.

cable:
oxygen free pure copper gold plated rca's (2x5meter)
focal and stinger speaker cable
4gage main power from battery, distribution block splits this up into 2x8 gage cables which go straight into the amps (spade connectors crimpped into the blaupunkt cos of the connection point)

i installed it all myself.
feel free to have a listen and test her out..

i love my focal gear.. pity the top end stuff is stupidly expensive :(

:D
