Title: IGNITION COIL WIRING???
Post by: evlknvl on Aug 24, 2008, 11:59AM
Finishing off some of my wiring but not sure which wire is which for the ignition coil. From my factory harness I have 2 wires, 1 is black with white stripe and the other is green with black stripe. Can anyone tell me which is + and which is - as the manual for the corsair says the colours are different.

From memory the black green is the +  You should beable to test it with an led.  Cos it will only work in one circuit direction.
put an LED into the socket and give it a bit of a crank.

LED lights (light emitting diodes) will only light up of the flow of electricity is going the right way. so, you can figure out which wire is positve and which is negative if you hook an LED up to it. the incorrect way and it wont light up, the correct way it will. you will then know what wire is what.

pretty easy!

alternatively, get a regular lightbulb, and hook one side to the chassis (earth) and then the other side to one of the wires in question. the positive wire will light the bulb up, the negative wire will not.

considering all the work you're doing though, i would have thought you'd have a multimeter  :P

Absolutely not!

There are 3 wires in a house....... and more 50 from the standard ECU!

Easiest way is to goto autobarn/supercheap and buy a test lamp.

Clamp the aligator clip to ground/chassis, and then stick the needle into the socket of the wire. If it lights up, its positive, else, its not.

Simple.

I work in an electrical trade so for future reference: in all low voltage wiring the lighter colour in a pair is the positive.
i.e.
red + black... red = positive.
white + black... white = positive
pink/orange + blue (like nissan factory speaker wiring) pink/orange = Negative
black + green with black ... green + positive

That doesn't always hold true.

e.g. in vn-vz commodores, rear left speaker wiring: brown/black, yellow/blue.

brown/black is positive
yellow/blue is negative
