factory amp in the boot
« on: Mar 19, 2008, 10:14AM »
Does anyone know what the story on a factory amp in the boot is? Car is a U13 Attesa, there's a small box in the boot mounted under the parcel shelf towards the front of the car with 2x15 written on it - so I'm assuming it's an amp?? - with a single plug with around 6 wires into it (will have to double check that). I've not bothered touching the rear speakers since I bought the car years ago, but had a look recently, it's not wired into anything at present it seems (i.e. rear speakers powered directly by head unit).

I'm not sure why I really care about it much, will probably just pull it out, but I had a bit of a chuckle when I first noticed it. Would like to hear if anyone has used it for anything stupid. :D

My SSS has two amps on the parcel shelf, each with 2x40WRMS written on them (they're Clarion OEM things). I'm pretty sure the 'standard' sound package was amped front speakers and unamped rear speakers.

They're nothing special - one of my next tasks is to run new wiring directly to my speakers, and get rid of the amps (one of which is about to die - flicks on and off intermittently).

R32 skylines had a similar sort of setup, a round Clarion amp under the parcel shelf that powered the rear speakers.

I've seen adapter plugs to eliminate the amp, or you could find a wiring diagram and bridge some pins in the plug to eliminate the amp. It would save running new speaker wiring.

Yeah, I've seen a pin-out somewhere for them too - I think a bypass would be the easiest way around it, as long as you have a headunit capable of running the speakers on there own (pretty much everything except the stock system :))

Re-wiring the whole sound system is one my " To-Do List"
After having the current deck installed and getting told that Alberts CarAudio did a shit arse job on the previous owners speakers & amp upgrade. They used speaker wire as RCA leads and did a dodgy job of bypassing the rear factory amps. Also destroyed the mounting wholes for the speaker griller.
I hate them so much.

Hmm well I wasn't gonna use it in the car, maybe rip it out and use as for a dodgy battery/powerpack little DIY portable or computer speaker set. ;)

one of my amps was rooted so i just ditched them and got the speakers rewired through the headunit.
