KA24e cams?
« on: Nov 18, 2008, 07:50PM »
Hey all,

I was looking at doin some mild work on my KA, was looking at things like cams, head work, etc etc...
So far I have an ANTRX stage 3 chip/afm, 2.5"cat back zorst, dummy cat [no flames i know the risks], an SR short shifter? [off eurisko] and a slightly back yard cai with K&N pod...

I'm not looking for a huge amount of power just mainly after responsiveness and maintaing driveability is an issue as its a daily...

Not sure how i go about selecting cams, and working out what work needs to be done to heads...?
or are there any other viabe options...?

cheers for the help in advance guys...

there was an article about the different cam grinds like the r4 and r6 etc and the work reqiured for both.

i put the r4 cam in with some mild head work and the breathability was improved, no dramatic change to daily driving...just alot more fun.

Anything is better than the stock cam.

Personally, when i do go for a larger cam, it'll be around the 270-280 deg duration mark, i've been running a 262/264 duration cam from Wade's for the last 5 odd years, really woke the engine up compared to a wheezy stock cam. Wouldn't struggle upto the rev cut like stock. Didn't loose out down low either.

They will resurface the wiper pads that make contact with the cam, yes. Last time i had a set done they charged $100 iirc, that has probably gone up though.

270/270 is what i sell.

That's the R4 cam...yes...?
Are these still available...?

Also, should i look at getting solid lifters and such,? Or is it not needed?

How much will head work on the engine [with said cam] effect the overall performance?

sorry for the questions guys, never really had to do with any sort of internal work...

i'm not sure on current pricings as i havent sold a cam in over 18 months. i can still organise the cams to be done no problems at all.. it'd be a regrind..

you can go straight to wades but it will cost you more, unless their trade prices have changed - they probably forget me too so maybe i cant get it cheap anymore?

solid lifters arent needed but you'll need to machine down the cam caps/towers (the arch type things that sit over the cam) as the base circle of the cam changes which leaves clearance between the hydraulic lifters and the cam which makes noise.

any headwork would give an improvement in performance, i cant say how much extra though.. no one has ever really done before and after dynos.

Thank you NOSS,
would it be alright if i organised a cam [any u12 KA cam will do?] and some lifters,
and sent them too you? rather than you having to organise a change over or what not...

and i might look into getting the car dyno'ed just to see what the KW is worth in $$

uh oh.. this is probably where we find out its worth minus 5kw lol

yeh thats cool. i'll have to check with wades that i still get good prices, otherwise i would recommend you just going direct to them (you can post to them) as otherwise its double handling for no reason.
