Wreckers in Sydney? (bluebird sss)
« on: Jul 24, 2007, 01:07AM »
the instrument cluster on my manual 94 bluebird sss u13 S1 has gone (speedo died), so i'm in the market for a 2nd hand one, or even an aftermarket one. it's been a nightmare trying to find one though. a few places have auto ones, or non-sss, but as for the one i need it's slim pickings. does anyone know of any sydney wreckers that might have manual bluebird sss parts? i'm really struggling to find one to be honest.

I know that there was the instrument cluster from a manual U13 SSS sitting on the car's drivers seat at Pick'N'Payless in Blacktown a week ago :)

Probably not working though - the car was absolutely stripped (I took the rear amp - probably the only salvageable thing)

Just a tip mate, buy a non SSS cluster, unscrew the broken speedo unit out of it (yes it unscrews) and install the new speedo unit in its place. Takes a couple of minutes to do.

no offense, but please don't give that kind of advice unless you've tried and tested it before. as you can see, the circuitry is completely different and there is absolutely no wiring for the HUD.

SSS speedo on left, standard speedo on right

i wouldn't have a clue dude. when i had it in, it'd work maybe 10% of the time. that is, it'd randomly start working, then just stop at random intervals lol.

Ah ok.  The speedo's in the U12 munch these little cogs in the unit, which we are told is a common fault in alot of nissans.

Jello is right, speedo is controlled by a separate motor.

My U12 T has recently puled this maneuvor. Sorry about the spelling, just realised i have no idea on how to spell that 'M' word. Its now turnin over ultra slowly ie. i get a supposed 4-5km per tank of gas. But today it randomly decided to pipe up and work again..

it's weird, because from what i've gathered the speedo dying is a pretty common problem on U13 bluebirds. yet finding a replacement, or an aftermarket one seems near impossible (for a manual one anyway).  :-\

Why does the speedo unit have to be from a manual U13 SSS?

You can buy an auto SSS (still with the HUD stuff) gauge cluster, take the speedo unit out of it and fit that into your existing manual gauge cluster.

actually i didn't think of that lol. i've currently got an auto instrument cluster in my manual car. the speedo and HUD work, but the reading are way off. that is, the speed it shows it like 2x that of my real speed. also, the temperature gauge shows incorrect information. this is all probably due to the wiring being somewhat different and grounding issues maybe? however, i'll give that suggestion a go.. who knows it might work

I have done exactly that in my formerly automatic U12 Bluebird...

Got a manual cluster, swapped my original auto speedo from the auto cluster into the manual.  All works fine, bar the oil pressure gauge which is not hooked up.

Ahh crap my apologies. Wasn't aware that the actual SSS HUD speedo unit was different. Thought it was something else on the cluster that the display unit plugs into.
That and I played around and pulled apart an import SSS cluster (with no HUD) when I had my U13.

no worries mate. i put the auto speedo into my manual instrument cluster. it did jack all except give it a facelift (light grey speedo now hehe). i think the problem perhaps lies in that the auto speedo is actually a series 2 and my car is a series 1 - though the only difference i could see on the instrument clusters themselves was the addition of an airbag light + its wiring. maybe it's just that auto speedos for U13s won't operate correctly in a manual car. but hey, at least the temperature gauge is fine now :P i'll keep searching those god damned wreckers (though it's really tiring me the fuck out :P)

in other news, i can't believe the old bluey was racing so closely to my mates fairmont. his car was a bit quicker off the block, but apart from that it was about even. 3 people in each car, and they're like a 4L RWD 6cyl 168kW car vs the bluey 2.4L FWD 4cyl 112kW. granted, i probably wasted more petrol as my revs were through the roof heh.

Nah, his huge 4 litre two more cylinder capacity would have wasted more fuel champ :)  KA's aren't that bad of an engine, very under rated, which is good and bad!
