Who has ADSL?? Who u with? Good or bad?

Looking at getting ADSL, best plan I've found so far is with Ozemail.

Free connection, $64.95month (12months), unlimited d/l, 512K connection. BUT, dynamic IP. 

Any better plans out there?  There's a heap of other companies that have pretty competitive plans, but dunno about their service.

can anyone recommend anything?

Just like to point out, it's not really unlimited, it's 12Gb then afterwards you get 'shaped' (capped) in peak times.

As for it being a dynamic ip, it's not really that bad unless you plan on running your own email server or something along those lines.

we just got telstra bigpond adsl home wireless (i shouldnt really put telstra in there as there not owned by them apparently ) you can have a few computers hooked up and no cables. 

but i wouldnt reccomend bigpond at all, there customer service is horrible, not just because it takes an average 30minutes to get through to a so called technician but because the techicians dont know what there talking about, and the installation disc that came with it had several flaws.  i had to figure it all out because they couldnt help, and then they begged me to tell them how to fix it but i didnt(why should i help them if they are fucking us around so much)

we ended up having to get a replacement modem as the original ones default/reset button was fucked because it had to be pressed so many times, they wanted us to pay for it. but we didnt in the end.  and one day a telstra technician had to come to the house, and he explained that bigpond wasnt owned by telstra (hence the breakdown in communication), and that the technicians are yet to be trained properly with the wireless setup. 

they are fucking pathetic. 

sorry for the long post.  as far as reccomendations i was extremely happy with iprimus when we had dialup, never had a problem, and id imagine there broadband would be the same.

I love ADSL. Since its widespread introduction my dial-up has increased 3-fold and I regularly get a sustained 15-20kb/s in Kazaa and WinMX. It's great!!

That's why a static IP would be cool. from what i've been reading ozemail is cool, just wondering what plans some of you guys are on.  12gig's pretty good, after that, it's only slowed during peak times (5pm - 8pm) etc.  So, sounds like a good deal, especially at that price.

Well i've got netspace 256/64 adsl.. Basically i get everything from PIPE with no cap or limits. For the 10 months i've had adsl, i've averaged around 50gig a month. Which is pretty good considering the maximum you can download on 256 in a month is around 65gig. (downloading 24/7)

I'm a big fan of movies and tv episodes so that's what i download. And the odd game here and there. I would be getting the max 65gig a month, but 1) I play a few games online on the weekend so I can't download during that time as the lag is shithouse , and 2) some of my other family use the internet sometimes so I can't leech at full speed when they're on it.

Once I get a job i'll be upgrading to 512/128. (got an interview Monday so hopefully something will come out of it)

in an hour it downloads 95meg, most movies are 700meg*, so around 7 1/2 hrs. With 512/128, it's half that time. So basically i download at ~27Kb/s

These movies are of course dvd quality movies trailers that all happen to be 700MB.

Unless you want 'unlimited' adsl, go with TPG for $50 a month.. Not sure how it is over in Melbourne, but my mate has it here in Adelaide, and gets disconnected every two hours. He counts down every month and cant wait to be out of contract (10 more months)

But i really don't know, go over to whirlpool.net.au and see what plan tickles your pickle

Oh, and even if you go past the 4 gig limit with netspace, the free downloads are still full speed

I've been with internode for a fairly long time now.
im currently on 512/128 and 12gb a month.
paying 79.95 per month, but the cap will raise to 32gb apparently soon.
And out of all the service providers i've had to deal with internode is the best.
fast, efficient and friendly. And i've never had any down time that wasnt my fault (damn wacky phone lines).

so if your still lookin around, check out internode, they have a good thing goin on.

it's not 'unlimited' in the true sense. You get capped at dialup speeds after 12gig. Sure you can download fast, but you can't download a lot.

But, if you know that you won't go over 12gig, then it's a good plan

I'm on the el-cheapo DART plan.

$48 per month, 256/64k.
5GB download limit, once you go over that your shaped to 64k (about 8kilobytes per sec).

Free data between all DART users nation wide.  The DART DC++ hub is growing constantly .  I get most of my stuff from there.

PIPE is also free, but its not yet active in Melb/Tassie (they share the same connect backbone).

The usage meter has not worked properly since I got ADSL last month so my usage for this months say 8.61kb when i've downloaded about 5GB.  hehe

Part of this success is because PIPE Networks operates a vendor and carrier neutral environment for it's peers and provides fully redundant, state of the art layer 2/3 Ethernet switches and routers operating up to gigabit speed.

PIPE Networks is a Metro Area Internet Exchange in that it has distributed its switching capacity in areas of high customer density in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart with Canberra due to come online in Q2, 2004. As such the PIPE can connect to customers in buildings other than its main point of presence.

Public and Private Educational establishments

So in summary, pipenetworks is an organisation that allows ISP's to connect to eachother within each state, and allows them to transfer data between eachother at a minimal cost. As a result, if you have an ISP connected to pipe, and you download data that is from another ISP that is connected to pipe, the data is 'free' and unmetered. ISP's pay an upfront cost to connect to the pipenetwork (~$5000), and then a monthly cost($1100), but it pays itself off, because they don't have to pay bandwidth charges as the data stays within the same network.

im with telstra cable ...60$ a month 10gb cap where it goes to about 128kb/or dialup speeds. prettyu fast for most stuff ....telstra site i get upto 750kb /s when dl stuff and that doent count to dl limit whcih is great. its shared over 3 computers and no probs there. i have had cable for the last 4 years and i wont go back now to dialup .....id rather pay the extra and really cable is probably cheaper than diaplup now if u include phone calls.

Optus Cable : Currently 12GB limit (Used to be 3GB) - Limit is based on downloads, Completely unlimited Upstream

Telstra Cable : Currently 10GB Limit (Changed several times, was 550MB at one stage) - Limit is based on BOTH upstream AND downstream. so effectivly, its a lot less than you think.

After the limit is reached, speed limiters are implemented. Optus:  20 - 28.8Kbps, Telstra: 64Kbps

i got 1.5MB ADSL with 8gb download on and off peak (16gb all up) and uploads arent counted. i pay no more than 80 bucks a month.. and between 4 pplz that i live with.. thats fuck all oh and when i signed up i only had the option of a 3 month contract.. but 6 months is still reasonable the plan i have has gone up to $89 p.m but the previous customers dont get moved to the new pricing.. fixed pricing rocks.. how ever.. if the pricing decreases u do go down in pricing

what can i say.. i went from iiPOO (iiNet Technologies) who i was with for 6-7 yrs having to deal with there ups n downs like a yo yo.. to a connection that rarely goes down.. and if it does.. its fault of telstra. i get sent sms msgs telling me that there is going to be an outage and when i can expect it to be up.. to me thats great service

limewire would have to one of the worst download programs out there.
get winmx or soulseek, then you will see your speeds improving. just because ur downloads go slow doesnt mean that its fault of adsl. there are plenty of lil twats that set there speeds to say "1.5MB DSL/T1" and they only have dial up.. watch out for them when i down load updates for my graphics design program i get rates between 180k/s-200k/s and as stated above im on 1.5MB ADSL, it also takes a couple of minutes if that to download 10MB worth of data from a reliable source, eg. iinets ftp server i get speeds of 160k/s.  the speed of the download majorly depends on the source and then of course your connection speed is taken into account

I started with Napster and stopped for obvious reasons

tried lime wire it was crap looked elsewhere

Tried a few others and settled with Kazza / Grokster (I used my firewall to stop all the ad's ) and now thats over Tried that one that has the little ladybug Icon (Cant remember) Crap anyway
 so I am back to Limewire.
As for ftp I have had up to 500 k/s but have always struggled with share programs, Some game sites I download demos they clock at about 300k/s. Never had much luck with the file share programs like limewire / Napster never over 110k/s Approx
As for adsl I dont use it I have cable.   I will try soulSeek and winmx

BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY!!!!! NORLINK!!!! my housemate had the phone on with them and now im not sure if it is even a real company!!!!

i asked to join on a 512K plan over a year with a 15gig download and when i get past 15gig i get hit to a 256k connection.for $80.00 a month and a 300 connection fee that u can pay off over 3 mths.. THATS NOT THE BAD BIT!! it took me 6 weeks to get the modem, theyre excuse was that telstra was having problems with the exchange WHICH WAS BULLSH*T because i rang telstra and they said that there has been no problems at all....after i got the modem they didnt have my email ready until 2 and a half weeks after i got the modem.. THEN i was having problems with it one night and guess what .. they have no after hours tech support... you get transfered TO THE WORKERS HOUSE!!! i got put thru to a guy n he was in the middle of dinner...and now i have my email i dont recieve any, i was promised a webspace of 5 gig and that was bullshit... LOL im raving on now but if you ever have them trying to connect you tell them to FU*CK OFF!!!!!

but i was with AAPT(i had a 256K connection with a 10gig limit for $40 a month) and they were great and so is IPRIMUS (only had dialup and they were fine)

They reserve the right to cap you after 10 gig. Just keep it under 10 up until about the 20th of the month, then rape it. Ive done over 20 gig every month since ive had it and been capped once. I got to 37 before they did me over, and that was because i started at the start of the month.
