Parcel shelf
« on: Jun 12, 2002, 01:58AM »
Anyone here had to replace a parcel shelf?  i put some Sony 6x6 200w two ways into my parcel shelf last week, within the week my car got broken in to (out the front of my house too) and the speakers were ripped straight out of the shelf.  the bastards looked after their new acquisition by carefully unplugging the speakers before they ran off though, and they were kind enough to lock the door when leaving.  shame about the missing window.  Anyway, anyone had to replace a parcel?  How/who/why/the usual?

i've changed my parcel tray over to an mdf one. its cuts down on the vibration noise, and the audio sounds better in general when its mounted to mdf instead of metal. if you want one made up, i'll see what i can do.  ;D

shame a bout your speakers though. you gotta make things look stocko. i'm gonna fit the stock parcel tray over my mdf tray.

mine is made out of either 6 or 8mm mdf. nice & solid  ;D

the back edge had to be bevelled so it would fit in nicely at the window

because of the way the parcel shelf is made (the original one), i had to mount some new speakers.

when pulling back that parcel shelf the original one of mine snapped :(

so its sitting their broken for now... when i go to mount my new rear speakers (when i get the $$$) i'll just make a new one up and use the old one as a template and simply cut the new one out with a jigsaw... done!

i'll mount the speakers into the bodywork - more solid and there are 6" coax speakers and not 6x9's...

looking forward to showing every 1 my stereo when it eventually is finished :D

mounting the speakers into mdf is a better option, as mdf absobrs the vibrations which cause the buzzing noises that annoy so many people with their car stereo.

if you get buzzing in the front doors, a good option is to buy those little mdf rings (about $10 @ autobarn) and mount the rings to your metalwork and then the speakers to the rings. gets rid of almost all the buzzes. if you had more annoying noises, the next step would be sound deadener.

I'm getting a mate who is a cabinet maker to pinch some MDF from work, so I'm getting my parcel shelf done this Saturday morning.  It's gotta be done, because I've got a new head unit and another amp getting put in the car on Monday morning.  Question is, what sort of carpet/stuff did you guys/gals cover your parcel shelves with?  ??? I've got to go out and buy something (me thinks blue carpet) before Saturday morning.  Ideas?

well mounted mdf absorbs teh vibration well enough. you dont wanna have your speakers bouncin around on silicone. thats my opinion anyway.

For anyone who cares, I actually made my parcel shelf about two weeks ago.  This is what I did.

Got some 3mm MDF from a cabinet maker mate = $0.00
Went to the local auto trimmer for some black carpet = $20.00

Used the old parcel as a template for the new one, cut the holes and stuff out with a power tool thing (mind has gone blank, I can't think of what it's called), sprayed on a shitload of adhesive and stuck the craper on carefully, and held it down with some phone books, used scissors to cut out all the holes on the carpet, and while it was out put the speakers back in and screwed em in.  Peice of piss, cost my 20 bucks and lloks better than the ordinary brown carpet that I previously had.

yeah i too did mine a couple of months ago now!

umm i used 12mm mdf, used the existing (broken) parcel shelf as a template, cut the new one out with the JIGSAW, all the holes etc.
made sure it fit (had to do some minor adjustments cos the mdf was thicker than the old), then grabbed some "quick grip" and applied it to both surfaces (carpet and mdf) - waited for them to be touch dry then u whack them together, cut out the holes in the carpet out.

i left plent of "overhang" on the carpet so i could use the staple gun and staple it down on the under side of the shelf cos it looks more pro.

mounded my speakers into the parcel shelf, then slid the shelf back into the car and bolted it down. also refitted my rear brake light with velcrow on the bottom cos the shelf was too thick to use the existing bracket.

simple :D

hehe i did mine a while ago now, juz ripped out the original shelf, drilled holes in the metal and bolted 6x9's in. (Really hard to steal) then i got black grill cloth (Jaycars) and covered the shelf and speakers. - (I velcroed this down) so it looks like i have no speakers in the back! keep da stocko look. and with tinted windows, its difficult to see the speakers at all. hehe, works for me.

sorry guys, but ive been having a quick look at the parcel shelf, im going to put some nice 6" speakers in there soon, i got the 6x4s for the front, just have had time to mount them, anyway, how do u get to the parcel shelf, its in such an awkward position, how is it secured in the car? my plan is to put a thin mounting piece of mdf under the speakers, which i'll bolt to the metal then put the standard shelf over that
The car developed an electrical problem after the conrod knocked the distributor off

you will find that the parcel shelf will bend easily without breaking, just dont try fold it in half.

from memory, it should be secured in a few places with those funky plastic fastners, and possibly a bolt or two for the baby seat.
