Club level motorsports

A mate is looking at getting into the Bendigo Car Club, and I'm acting as technical consultant and conscience.

I'm starting this thread because I'm looking for ideas and possibly a vehicle. We were going to use his AD Van (B11 Sunny panel van) but it was way too crooked and rusted.

All racing exploits will be done based on cost, not lap times - all in fun.

I've been and spoken to people at the Bendigo Car Club, fees are reasonable for Non Speed Events (dirt racing at Bagshot) CAMS license for Speed Events adds to the cost.

Looking at buying
R31/Nissan Pulsar/Sunny
Mazda 323/Ford Laser
RWD Mazda 626

Leaning more towards RWD, because the main protagonist thinks that will be faster.

thoughts that need to be considered are:
  • transport - how do we get the car to/from the event? (Permits vs Trailers)
  • Vehicle Mods (to pass scrutineering as much as to go faster)

the plan is real shoestring budget racing. Number one factor - low cost. Factor 2 - fun. Lap times be damned, we'll never beat the WRX's.

I'd lean towards the R31 mate. The RB30's are pretty indestructible. Weight might be a problem but nothing a bit of weight removal can't fix. Upgrades should be relatively easy/cheap considering how many parts 31 owners can flog of other nissans.

I'd lean towards RWD too. Just make sure you don't get a honda...

There was an R31 Skyline at the BCC meet on Saturday night - all noise, dust and slide. It was a sight to see.

i went for the 180b with the six in it so i spose its a 240b sss coupe soon to be a 280b sss coupe, rear wheel drive, tuns a fun, early lancer with the 2.6 sigma engine would hammer and be rwd, light as, and for power and fun a cortina with a six in it would also go off, parts are cheap and plenty for both cars. a 910 bluebird weighs just under 1000kg when stripped out cheap to buy L20b engine 4w disc brakes, plenty to think about.

r31 ftw!
If you cant get one, a VN commodore will be a good contender

lwith the 31, lock the diff, get some s13 suspension and brakes, strip it - instant slider and will be a hoot to drive!!!

I forgot about the 910!

There was a VN wagon at the car club. Slooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww. Probably due to Auto.

We've hit a slight problem with accommodation - the shed where the car was to spend downtime fell through.
