Engine Upgrade R31 Pinny
« on: Nov 14, 2003, 09:21PM »
I currently own an 1987 R31 Pintara station wagon.

I wish to upgrade the engine, and all associated components, and I was after some help.

I know very little about cars ( I am learning though) and I would like to know what would be the best engine to buy, what other components I would need to change, and where I could find someone in southeast queensland that I could pay to have it done for me.

Thanks for help.

are you sure it's worth it? you could just sell the Pintara and buy a Skyline for the money (I own an R31 Pintara wagon myself).

If you really want to pop a new engine in the Pintara, may I suggest either a CA18DET or RB20DET (or equivalent N/A versions). They're generally the most common R31 Pintara engine swaps, seeing as the engines are found in RWD form easily (one from S13, the other from R31/R32), and cheaper than SR20DET's.

pffft...as if! go for an RB26, they're only 8k or so  :P ;D
Seriously, an RB20/25 is the best option, and mildly worked will rip the ass out of nearly everything (but not my car as soon as i've finished building the new motor  ;D)

A full moded ca20 with a supercharger & forged pistons could be looking at 150-160kw ... crank would hold with that kinda power id think.. 3,000 diy or 5,100 pro instaled

basics mods = cam, zorst, header, pod, afm pod adaptor = 550 + zorst from 700-1,500 depending on where and what

And you could get a lot of the CA20 internals and block cryotreated to strengthen them even moreso.

I have almost decided on putting the RB20DET into it.

I am currently doing my research but at the moment it seems the best alternative.

According to the spec sheet AllJap Imports had, that engine is 160kW...

Seems pretty damn sweet.

They wanted 2300 for a half cut.

thats a damn good price..

if you're budget concious, rb20det is definately the way to go, as they're quite cheap compared to rb25's and rb26's

also in qld if you're not increasing the displacement of your engine then you dont need to get an engineers cert. for example you could install a 2 litre v12 that pumped out 700kw stock and you wouldnt need to have it engineered.

so yeah, rb20 is definately you're best option. obviously other viable options if you wanna keep within the engineering rule is ca18 & sr20.. rb20 is easy though as it is documented more on the net.

keep us updated on what you do.

maybe it was 2800, I can't remember.  It was a whole 12 hours ago.

Anyway, I will most likely go for the RB20DET.

I am filling out the application form for a loan at the bank tomorrow.

Ha Ha.

Anyway it looks to be the best option, as you said there heaps of info and yeah.

Afterall, noone expects to get blown away by a stock looking station wagon
 ;D
