whenever i press a function (other than volume), so, on/off, equaliser, seek tracks etc etc, i get a pop in my subs... is this a problem with the headunit or with the amp/sub?

sounds like there might be a short in the H/U itself

The H/U is the first thing i'd check, is it new? under warranty? take your car somewhere to get them to look at it and give opinions, you can usually drag a techy out of a workshop and get them to listen to your problems for nothing

Definitely a problem in your HU.

Has it always happened, or just started recently?

sounds like the noise made when u join a positive and negitive wires together while the speaker is on. Try checking ur wiring. It could just be a faulty connection or a wire touching. But its probably ur head unit like the others said.
