CarPuters and MP3/DVD players
« on: Sep 13, 2005, 12:41AM »
This is something I have been planning on for a while now, and its gotten to the stage at which it has become a solid plan for the next 2 months or so (Damned uni and its constant barrage of work!)

Looking into MP3 players for cars, DVD players and whatnot, I have come across the conclusion that a in car computer (CarPuter) is probably the best solution for both.

Pros - Extremely flexible in storage space, upgrades, speed, and overall coolness

Cons - Not plug and play. Fiddly to install and run. Custom software needed to work.

Although im not sure of the number of people interested in this kind of project, i will detail my endeavours, photograph, and try my best to show each and every step taken to complete this task.

Firstly, quick rundown of WHY i want to use a CarPuter.

Looking at the latest DVD/MP3 players avaliable from the leading companies (Alpine, JVC, Sony etc) their features are pretty large, but, still limited.
Firstly, u still need cds/dvds to play music and video. Cumbersome at best. Who wants to change a cd when they are driving. Seriously... lol.
Motorised screens are cool... but too small for my liking. Nowadays these things come with hdd's... but all with a heafty price tag. Ive even seen a Head Unit with a add on unit which displays engine info, g-forces and numerous other data. Nice, but for more than $2500, man, i could almost buy another pintara for that!

Now, a carputer, has so much more to offer, with the benifit of being cheaper as well...

Unlimited space for songs and movies (hell, with 2 250Gb hdd's in a Raid array, u can store all the songs in the world, and most of the movies... alright, maybe not that much, but u aint gunna fill them anytime soon)
Instant access though touch screen or even remote control (and if u are technically minded, Voice Activated which is almost Knightrider coolness!)
5.1, 7.1 and even 7.2 point surround sound capability (depending on ur sound card and speaker/amp setup)
Wireless lan uplink to update everything (add more songs, movies etc) without needing to remove the computer from ur car!
Ability to add a COPS style Dash cam/rear vision cam and constant recording.
Datalogging and monitoring also possible (mix with the dash cam, you have a perminant black box recorder!)

And the list goes on, and on, and on.

Just an introduction, but if anyone is interested... ill be happy to go on. lol... i just dont want waste anyones time tho...

Catcha!

Ed

P.S - Been a while since ive been on the forum! I hope my absence wasnt mistaken for lack of interest! Just lack of time (again, i blame uni.... Spawn of the devil she is....lol)

Peace!

I'm thinking about something similar for myself, it's just a matter of scraping up some dosh.

I'm going with an 8" touchscreen LCD, cordless keyboard and a laptop. I already have a GPS mouse to use for moving maps, and eventually sat-nav style voice navigation.

we have already done this at work, kind of an experiment really.

We got an old AMD duron 1200 system, ripped it out of the case, and built it into the glove box. For power we used a 12v to 240v inverter, The screen was a 10" roof mount which was running off the s video output on the video card, and using a creative 5.1 sound card. the car had 2 4ch amps, one which ran the fronts and the rears, the other ran the the centre (which we had bulit into the centre of the dash) and the sub.  To connect the amps to the computer, a set of rca's were use for each pair of speakers, with an rca to 3.5mm stereo adaptor to connect to the back of the pc.  The system ran fine for about 2 weeks, when it started having heating problems, so we had to run a bit of ducting to the box with a standard pc fan, and make an extraction duct, also using a pc fan.

So far that has been the only problem, and its been running now for 3 months.

Nice SSStick, but the overheating problem is expected, as no ventilation can get to the computer in the glovebox or boot. The new VIA EPIA motherboard/CPU all in one computers are specifically designed for that.

Also, have you had any problems with startup and booting (voltage spikes when u start the car and whatnot)?. There are Intelligent voltage supplies which filter out spike, keep a constant regulated supply, and also give enough power to allow shut down when the car is turned off.

ashman01, for a price, it all depends on what ur looking for. Basic Setup, Motherboard(built in Soundcard and video), Ram, Hdd, 7' LCD Screen... ur looking at around $900 - 1200 depending where u shop. As for instalation, pretty much anywhere. Preferably under the dash (Shortest run for the screen) but computer can be installed anywhere  (EPIA motherboard has a footprint of 17cm x 17cm)

Those who are more electronically mined (such as myself), integrating all the ECU signals and inputting them into the computer for full datalogging is my ultimate aim.

GPS and moving map software is also an awsome idea. 90 bucks will get u the reciever and software (god bless ebay!)

Exactly what i was thinkin Jono. Ill be doing a full tech article on my endeavors when i get started. Im also in the midst of making a LCD Tachometer for my GLI dash. I got me a 16F84A Microcontroller (basic i know) and programmer, and a 160x80 Dot LCD Screen. Still sitting on my desk until uni dies down a bit... lol

As for ashman01:

Kinda defeats the purpose dont ya think? lol Ps2's are nice... but when are u gunna play GT3 when ur driving? lol nah, for a PS2 install, very simple. Inverter (12V DC-AC 240) and a Screen is all u need. But done to death in my opinion... especially when PSP's are out nowadays...

Theres also a Automation Controller card in Jaycars catalogue somewhere... i think... 10amp relays built in. Imagine what u can do with that baby hooked up to the CarPuter..... MMMMMM.....

LOL  8) ULTIMATE BADDASS!

True but easy for some1 like me and still would  get as many "wows" from friends as a computer would. Also ps2 controler is easyer to play games with in car than a keyboard/mouse and lastly as for the gt4 comment, i dont no how u drive but i dont usualy drive in real life like i drive on gt4.

I have a Belkin USB game pad that has all the same buttons as the PS1 dual shock controller, plus a couple more in the middle to change profiles. The only problem with it is that it's bigger than the original Xbox controller. It has fully programmable buttons, you can put a macro on each one if you want, and it automatically switches between button profiles when you start a game.

However, if someone was to get an LCD HUD running with the steering wheel and pedals connected to the computer, that would be the ultimate setting for a game of GT4 :D

Haha, if u want to do that u should hook a projecter up in ur car facing the front and drive up facing a wall so u can play gt4 with wheel peddels and a big screen.

I kinda half hooked mine up, but I had heaps of inverter noise from the dc-dc converter. Kinda got fed up with it and I'll probably leave it until I get my screen installed in the head unit's position.

I decided whats the point with it all.  I'm mostly driving alone, and fuel $$$ has made roadtips few and far between  :(
Prob just set it up for the romantic occation with projector on the roof, lying on bonnet for own private drive in movies.

But i'll still be envious of those that have one... they just look cool.

Just thought i'ld let you all know that i also am planning on putting a computer into my car... i've got everything i need, bar the touchscreen which should be arriving later this week, then i've just gotta figure out where to put the screen in my dash?

I intend on keeping my h/u and the screen is 7", any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Right now i'm thinking about taking out the ash tray/cig lighter and building it onto there angled up towards me... it's hard to explain, might bust out paint and tyr to draw a diagram later.

http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/forums/index.php?

I've been having a look around in the car audio sections of CAA, haven't really had a look at the CAASQ or Carputer sections yet.

Has www.mp3car.com been mentioned?

Kind of like where the factory nav screen is in VX Commodores? I thought about putting mine there but the shifter obscures it when it's in Park. I'm taking the pocket below the head unit out, and building my screen into that almost-double-din slot in the dash. I'm then going to put my head unit where you're going to put your screen, but below the ash tray and cig. lighter.

that's definately the most logical place to put the screen... and i know what u mean with the shifter getting in the way. I'll probably end up putting it where the h/u is now, i was just being a bit lazy. Gonna have to get up off my arse and hack apart my dash *yay*  ;D

and www.mp3car.com is by far the best place for info on carputers, I tend to lurk there daily.

this post has been here for a while but here my two cents.
If you deck has a removable face jamie, you could run a multi core cable to the head unit mounted under the seat, then mount the face panel anywhere on the dash or even in your sun visor.
Just solder the terminals on the head unit in parallel with the terminals on the face panel.
I always thought a good place in my u12 would be just above where the current h/u is now.

This would probably only be suitable for the pioneer decks that have the eject button on the main unit behind the face panel.

I've seen Sonys, Alpines and Kenwoods with the eject button behind the face too. Practically all units with a flip face have them there.

my jvc has a really annoying eject, you push the button on the front of the face, it then mechanically (not electronically) flips down and the cd ejects.
the eject button on the face panel has a little pin that pokes through and pushes a catch to make the face flip down. I can't seem to spot a button when i've been poking around in there. if I wanted to see if the button triggered something electronically i'd have to solder a multi-core cable on and see if anything happened when I pushed the button.

i dont see why not. Its not for audio. just for data and shit for the screen. I was having another look tonight, I reckon a good place in my car would be between the air-con controls and the din slot. All I would have to do is cut a little bit out so the face panel fits in there nicely.
do you have a suitable head unit for this jamie?

also where did you guys get your screens. I just started looking tonight and couldn't find anything more than 5.5"

US ebay, they're a 7" touch screen, mine was about $240 delivered from hong kong. They're a good quality screen too, apparently the same internals as the Xenarc (or some other high-quality brand) screens that everyone over at mp3car.com rave about.

Mine has one dead red pixel, it isn't noticeable in normal use though. You just about need a magnifying glass to see it.

I read that on mp3car and when i took mine apart i found much to my liking that is is 100% true ;D

I got mine for about AU$260 delivered... and no dead pixels.

Although it does have this annoying green bar (onscreen menu thing) that i can't get to piss off.
