This weeks car audio install
« on: Jul 11, 2006, 11:34PM »
This weekend that just went I poured yet another $750 into the car audio install.

Replacing the project DBD box is a modest entry level soundstream dual 2ohm 12' sub in a PREFAB BOX!! I've never bought a prefab box in my life it feels so weird. This sub isn't particularly loud (due to me not tuning it yet) but it sure does hit hard.

Sending the rooted crossifre splits to the sin bin is a pair of nice also entry level sounstream XSC.6 splits. They have a suprisingly crisp sound, a mate of mine had a pair of these and I was very impressed so I had to buy some.

To amplify the speakers I picked up a Pioneer GM-600F amp. 4x60wrms at 4ohm. Its not the best amp in the world, but I knew i could trust the internals of it.

..buying it was the easy part

installing it required the help of a few monkeys.

I relocated my response amp to the boot to power the sub nicely at 255wrms/voice coil
We ran enough cables to allow me to have the crossovers on display in the boot.
We also worked out a good way to utilise the standard u12 speaker pods to mount a 6.5" driver nicely.
a 4g wire was also run in to replace one of the two 8g's i already had.

basic sub in suprisingly compact box

f00ly sick amp rack

you get a basic pintara door pocket mate, cut a 6" hole, stick on an mdf ring

fill it up with 10 tons of body filler and you have a sexy pod mate (notes: not finished yet)

i moved it away from the power cables and i'm still getting sound. The only place its remotely near the power cables is where it goes into the amp. I'll try replacing it with shielded cable this weekend and see how I go.

We've decided to fibreglass the pods. They're gonna have holes for 2 midbass' in each door. So now I gotta track down another pair of splits, which isn't hard, already found some tonight, just gotta buy em on the weekend.

It's the easiest way to get the shape he's after.

About the engine noise, you'll always notice it a little more out of your tweeters because engine noise is a high frequency sound.

Try relocating the crossovers up the front near the splits, see if that helps. Speaker wire usually doesn't induct engine noise.

If you're spending that much money on front speakers, make sure you sound deaden your doors well. It'll make your speakers sound soo much better.

sound deadening eh..something to think about while the whole car is practically apart. My central locking stopped working with the alarm when I did all the rewiring too. Its shitting me to tears, i'm gonna go tackle it now.

I Think I can live with the engine noise, its only on the drivers side tweeter. its weird because it does it when the amp isn't turned on. Also the power cables for the amp run up the passenger side, so I can't help but be freaked out by what is going on here.

hehe with your central locking, check the ground...

when i did my alarm the ground came a little loose on the spade terminal and made me crack the shits and yeh.

my central locking is intermittent at the moment. I though it was the positive wire (it is spliced onto my old amp wire which is still there), so I re-soldered it, 3 times, still to no avail. I shall have a look at the earth.

Sounds like something is inducing noise to your tweeters. When the amp is turned on, it provides a better signal to noise ratio, that is probably why you are not hearing the noise. Maybe it's a good idea to have the crossover close to the tweeters as it should filter out the lower frequency noises. Having long cables running to the tweeters would make it more susceptible to noise.   ;D

My tweeters are amped from the boot and I have no issues with noise at all. And havnt ever had any problems so I'm not sure as to what would cause it after the amp.

If there was any noise induced in the tweeter wires it would be minimal.

Have you tried disconnecting the crossovers from the amp? Does it stop the noise?
