Small job turns into major....
« on: Oct 25, 2015, 08:12PM »
Ever had one of those jobs you wish you never started??

Handbrake was dead-set sluggish and not holding on the hills. Easy five minute job right?  10mm long series socket down the top of the handbrake lever, tighten the nut and away you go.... or so I thought.

Wind, wind, wind, 'ping' - off snaps the threaded bar on the end of the handbrake cable.  Nut had bottomed out and too much torque - fantastic, the job is no longer a five minute fix. >:(

Now to sort out that job...

So - what is your most recent simple job that ended in all manner of pain in the backside and wallet?  Share it so we can all laugh (or commiserate...)! :)

And the bulb has blown in the right hand fog light too.

And we know how quick and easy they are to replace..... ::)

When I replaced the bulb in the left foggie not so long back it was a case of skinned knuckles and contortions to get up behind the front lip to get to the back of the light.  Why so difficult?!

A quick query...

Anyone know the part number for the handbrake cable - or if it is common with any other Nissan models?  nothing on ebay or otherwise for a replacement cable.

I have contacted a couple of wreckers to see what can be found.  I will also see if I can get a new cable end swaged on to the cable tomorrow.

Check and make sure the hand brake cable isn't stuck / binding inside it's sleeve, I had this happen twice on the grey trx, which caused the handbrake to actuate in a similar manner: felt "sluggish" and would not hold on any sort of slope, because only one caliper was holding.

Front lower control arm bushes are not fun.

Good idea.  Thanks.

When I get the cable sorted out I will have a look.

There is a local business that can make up cables, so I am hoping to get a new end swaged on at the adjuster and I will run through and check the cables back to the calipers.

Disconnect from the caliper and see if the cable moves smoothly and evenly?

I am going to give the cable a bath in CRC / WD40 when I put it all back together - just in case!

Handbrake all fixed.  Had a new inner cable and end made up for $33.  All fitted and working.

The brake place wouldn't swage a new end on an old cable, fair enough I guess, so it needed a little bit extra work for a new cable, but it's all good now.

The outer (rear) cables are moving freely and are in good condition so no work needed there.
