Couple of problems with a carby 1.3L Ford Festiva
« on: Sep 3, 2008, 09:18AM »
Hey guys,

Recently got given one of these beasts with the intention of selling it. The thing is great running like a dream except for 2 problems.

1st problem is that when you start it cold it blows more black smoke than u can believe, even making it hard to see. The idle drops to next to nothing as well.
When its warmed up for a few mins its perfect and start it warm with no probs.

2nd problem is gearbox. U can be in a gear and the gear stick can move around like its in neutral. Massive play so to speak. Gear changing feels fine jst play.
Im hoping its a small easy fix and now a gearbox on the way out.

Thanx for the help.

Gearbox play would be either bushes or linkages.

For the cold start, sounds like the auto choke or something like that might be playing up.

Needs more sohc KA

seriously though, got any self serve wreckers out your way? try and pick up a 2nd hand carb if you want to do it on the cheap?

can you get your hands on the carby section of the FSM? Pull it down and clean out the idle gear? (sorry, my carby knowledge is little to non!)

could be valve stem seals non existant causing oily mix on start up?  once its warm the oil would not get to pool and hence not be smokey?

only one way to find out do a wet compression test. my guess would be carby.
if you have not had experience with carbies i would not touch it. do what sss said get one from the wreckers. iv'e rebuilt a heap of carby's in my time and they are not something you muck around with unless you have all the needed hieghts for floats and adjustment lengths for mixture and the like. most ajustable screws on the ford carbie have a cork seal inside for sealing and if damaged your car will never run the same again.
