Replacing ball joints?
« on: Dec 24, 2007, 11:36AM »
Last time I was under the car, I noticed that the rubber boots on my ball joints have disintegrated, and I have some weird noises going from drive to reverse and braking..

My mate from a service centre said once the rubber has perished, the ball joints tend to deteriorate very quickly. Is it possible to replace just the ball joint, or does the whole control arm need to be replaced?

Has anyone got any ideas about the cost involved?

I'm trying to bring my pinti up to standard now.. it has a few problems :P Like brakes, suspension, tyres and ball joints... but that's about it :)

Cheers,

Paul.

CV joints or ball joints?

To replace the ball joints, undo the 3 nuts holding it to the control arm, then loosen the bolt through the hub but don't undo it fully, and then get a hammer and smack the hub where the ball joint bolts through it. If you hit it hard enough the taper between the hub and the ball joint will part and then you undo the nut you loosened and take the ball joint out, then just bolt the new one in in its place.
