I was walking down the local mall the other night after the pub closed and walks past 2 blokes that were undercover cops.

50 meters down the mall I see a dual Triton with a ARB bullbar and Warn winch and 2 spotties and had a canopie on the back. I said to my mates "check this out an undercover Dogbox" the say fuck off it is. I said righto check out the box on the dash with the red and blue light.

Then the shut up, there getting sneakier.
Your car may be able to go faster.
But I can go any where. except into a garage, underground carpark, bridge...

2 sticks and manual locking hubs. have to get out to drive it around

Surely its got to be illegal for cops on open licences to be displaying P plates, the average joe can get booked for it, why is it ok for them. as far as i know a cop car is only except from certain laws and only when its lights are on, im sure that isnt one of them.

I have no problem with undercover cops, i think they're clever. but i thought they only used new cars because they were easy to keep in compliance with the laws. older cars start to fall into disarray

Cops can speed, thats illegal right?

Cops are exempt from road rules under patrol, their enforcing the law, funnily by breaking it, but that's how things have to be sometimes to work.

Cops are exempt from road rules under patrol

Surely that can't be right!

I was under the impression that police could only "legally" speed and run red lights etc. when on a P1 (priority 1) call-out, with their lights and siren going full blaze.

Rest of the time they should be setting a good example. That's my understanding anyway.

for those who are slow on the up take: I put legally in bunny-ears to imply that they might speed anyway because who's going to stop them?

A Cop got charged for speeding and fired recently in my town whilst in a patrol car. He was dobbed in by a few civvies and then booked by an undercover car who followed him doing 150 along the highway. without sirens or warning lights.

Cop cars can only exceed the speed limit in two scenarios, one being a pursuit the other when immediate response is needed (usually only when there's a danger to civilians)
even then only certain cop cars can exceed the speed limit (paddy wagons can't and the new lotus thats driving around in Sydney aren't allowed)

In NSW you cannot be charged for displaying P plates when you are on your full license, although however you must obey the restrictions regarding speed. IE a car with P1 plates displayed cannot exceed 90kph.

I'm pretty sure Police cars are allowed to park in loading zones etc when attending a call. not when attending lunch. same goes for U turns in no u turns, but their sirens and warning lights must be on.

I was always under the assumption they can speed (not 150 lol) alittle more than the limit to get ahead of the traffic for patrolling reasons. I mean whats the use of a HWP car if everyone knows his there? Even if it's unmarked, you can clearly tell when one is beside you.

I've seen them speed off in a 60 zone many many times, bleh. If you aren't doing anything wrong, who cares. I learnt my lesson through being a hero on the road rather than an enthusiast.

Bah, maybe I should make some recordings of them doing it and send it in to their IC HWP officer.

you should, wouldn't be admissible as evidence unless the police officer in question agreed to it though.

We also had a cop killed when they were street racing once a couple years back.. 160 round a bend to overtake the other police car, lost control in the wet and slammed into a tree killing the passenger. The driver nearly got charged but got out on a technicality. The magistrate berated all officers involved as immediate response wasn't necessary.

So since then the other older officers have been cracking down on the other ones for being irresponsible etc... we also have a lot of the green cops straight out of the academy (and sometimes still in the academy) who will pull you over for anything they can find and be pricks about it too. I don't mind being pulled over for a random breath test if the officer is polite.

I agree entirely, there is nothing more annoying than being pulled over for a 'random breath test' after being selected out of a group of cars on the road because its not standard, I love having mod plates for everything though :P gives them the real shits when they cant get you for anything

The cop that done me was interested in what the motor had, but I never told him!  :-X

You get some good cops though like we were out in a padock driving around and a cop came. Before i started to do it the cop pulled me over and asked if i was doing circle work i said i was about to and he smiled and said theres plenty of places out of town to do that and let me go and said the same to my friend.

ive always had a pretty insane eye for spotting undercovers (like its not obvoius enough) but yer basically i will always make sure there are no vy-vz-ve commodores with sun louvres and pop-ups on the dash behind me before even considering speeding. this makes that alot harder tho

ive already taken to asume any car on the road is a cop anyway... keeps you outa trouble... we recently had a black WRX with "chromies" patrolling here apparently, and also an unmarked fpv gt as our highway patrol commonly known for trying to race people at the lights to book them for street racing (its since been written off in a pursuit however) im personally all for it for here, it is getting out of control. theres a certain percentage who are taking the whole boy racer thing a little to far.... take it to the track or at least well outa town...

Here's a tip:

- only run people that you know personally for fun, in a nice, quiet out of the way spot.  :)

i think as you get older, racing on the street gets stupider.

There is nothing illegal about having a race up to the speed limit   :)
Seen that done before with a marked cop trying to sneak past in the left lane... the other driver launched and cop shit himself before speeding to slip in.

Different undercover cars won't happen in Vic for a while though, the commission is too bloody stupid and have plenty more to worry about.
Next there will be cops on Harly Davidsons with leather jackets and stuff to catch the biker gangs... oh and maybe semi trailers so they can catch the truckies tailgating.  ::)

There are a few different types of D cars getting around Brissie/Gold Coast. I've seen a black 32, orange XR5 (focus/festy thing) and a black subaru liberty over the past few weeks.

There's also a cop from Boondall police station no doubt driving around in a nice black BA XR6. He followed a lady into the servo I work at and then put on the lights, had a long chat to her, then he got her to get into his car, and she came in and told us she had to leave her car at the servo until the next day. Weird. There's also a dark blue VY Executive which cops from Albany Creek police station I believe love to use when they get the old radar gun out. Very sneaky, were pulled over into someones driveway, behind their fence, hiding behind the car with the gun, someone flashed us before we hit them so we crawled past at about 10km/h under the limit, they just glared at us when we drove past, so I gave them a wave and said hey mate.

When I am driving around I always put my UHF on channel 40. Truck drivers can spot undercover cops from a mile away. The truckies always broadcast where the cops are. I tell them if I see the RTA inspectors.

Yeah there is. Its called reckless driving, negligent driving etc etc. You can get done for it as well.

I dont know why anyone is complaining what the cops are driving/displaying on their cars... it shouldnt matter if you are obeying the laws. Ive seen magnas with p-plates and the frangipani stickers on the rear windows...

because if a cop is breaking the law by displaying P plates or by driving a defective vehicle they arent allowed on the roads, but have no drama handing out tickets for the very same offences committed by members of the public.

I'm sure many people here have broken the law at some point no matter how minor it was. I myself have been caught speeding by an undercover cop once. Its annoying, but if you do the crime, do the time.

Ed, at traffic school I remember the HWP module, the cop said they are exempt from road rules, thats why they can do all that "illegal" stuff to us but it's not for them..

Is that familiar to you?

Probably is, I don't think anyone was home as there were no cars on the driveway.

The cops driving the dark blue VY Exec around Albany Creek, Bridgeman Downs, Carseldine, Aspley, Bracken Ridge, etc are tools, pulled over a member of LS1 claiming they had him doing x speed, quite a lot over the limit. He was using a GPS with a speed logger but they didn't care, he escalated it to court then not long before the hearing date, they cancelled the hearing and withdrew the fine.

Yep.

The only thing they cant do is entice reckless behaviour (tailgating, berating, etc)

There is almost nothing they cant do. The lights and whatnot are only there to serve as a warning to other road users.

Apparently you can't use that in your defense anymore, When I got my sat nav at christmas it was the first thing I checked out.

Also I have been driving to the gold coast and logan a fair bit over the last fortnight and so far I have seen a dark blue suburu liberty, one of the crappy front wheel drive supercharged TRD camrys, a ford fairmont v8, a 100 series landcruiser with the camers/radar thing in the top of the snorkel (the 'hat' for the snorkel was mounted backwards so the radar shot backwards, a dead giveaway), multiple mercedes vito and ford transit vans, with this method they sit on the side of the road, clock you speeding and tell thir mate further along the road to pull you over, I have seen this mainly on the Warrego highway (QLD) and the Toowoomba Range Road and I'm pretty sure I saw a BMW 3 series the other day.

Well... In all honesty Im pretty sure every state has it worse than SA, hehe.
Im pretty sure the sneakiest thing we have is unmarked ford falcon/holden commodores sedan/station wagons on the side of the road with cameras in em.

Actually, they did put cameras in wheelie bins for a little bit, but theres was a bit of a uproar and they dont do it anymore.
My car history:
'88 Toyota Camry - Engine Died
'85 Toyota Corona - Engine Died
'82 Nissan Bluebird - Write Off
'88 Toyota Camry (same one as before) - Trans Died
'94 Nissan Bluebird LX - SOLD
'88 Toyota Hilux - Handed over to dad and now residing in Perth
'84 Nissan R30 Skyline - SOLD
'99 Nissan Stagea RS4-S - SOLD

Current rides:
'99 Mazda FD RX7 - Lots of fun, but currently up for sale
'95 Nissan Bluebird LX - Current sedate daily
'85 Suzuki GSXR250 - Motorbikes are fun! :)

Apparently the cop that pulls u over has to be the cop that caught u doing the offence...well thats in victoria...
some ive seen are lowered, mags, green mitsubishi 380 (waste of money IMO haha)
F6 Typhoon on the ballarat - geelong hwy
2 Sti's one with P-Plates
and the usual VE's

But as per this thread and more around the traps some of the cars the cops get to drive and get to break the law in does make u tempted to be one. jst for the thrill but shit pay and risking ya life isnt exaclty an ideal job

I think its fine that they use undercover cars, do watever they like if ur not breaking the law then thats ok. but when they start to break the law its slighty hipocritical and if they urg ppl on to drag and stuff then its arguably taking it a step too far

According to Qld legislation, all emergency vehicles are exempt from the Vehicle Standards and Safety Act, which means there is no such thing as a 'defective' police car.

I'm not sure about P-plates, that would come under licensing laws.

I've seen alot of different unmarked cop cars, they like the Aurions and 380s.

I heard the QPS don't like WRXs and the like as regular cop cars because they're too small compared to most others. I reckon it's got more to do with where they're built.

They had/have the WRX's in vic for a while but as most would know the cost to repair them is MASSIVE compared to an SS VY or VE commodore therefore most of the ones that were wrecked were replaced with the holdens...

in victoria the wrx cop cars caused them a lot of trouble as well because for whatever reason the radar system wasnt calibrated properly with the awd setup, and a lot of people were booked for speeding that werent and they had to pay back 10's of thousands of dollars of fines (maybe 100's i dont know) so they pulled the wrx's off the road for a while.. i dont think i saw them again before i moved to brisbane.

there is a trd aurion highway patrol car near my place.. hides along a few of the highways and at the end of the bridge into redcliffe.. its annoying though cause they say that they want to save lives.. but they're booking people doing 100 in a 90 zone that is completely sectioned off from populated areas..

if they wanted  to save lives why arent they booking people doing 60 or more through school zones? or catching people being fuckwits on residential streets? i understand catching completely irresponsible 'hoons' but ugh. same old argument.

as for what cars they drive undercover? who cares.. as long as they dont try to tempt you into breaking the law by egging you on for a race, then whats the problem. i dont have to repeat what a few others have said here.

Slightly off topic... Now i dont know about your states, but the SA police force here gets a nice paycheck actually.... I know this, because when investigating my preferred career option i found i could access it through a career in the police force.

A quote from SAPOL website:

Quote from: SAPOL
You'll be paid a salary of $37,493 per year as soon as you start training as a cadet at the Academy, rising to $43,536 when you graduate to probationary constable (usually after nine months).

Keep in mind these are the lowest ranks, as you get higher, your paycheck does too. I dont think its that bad?

i've seen more on cert 4 certificates :S
but you have to want to be a police officer, they're a kind of people you get, y'know... different...

for example.. there's psychological questions in the NSW police exam that you can fail.. y'know, and you have to answer them correctly and some of them can be ambiguous to which is a better answer than the others... they're just looking for the right kind of people to be police officers.

also there's an asshole in my town in an SS who keeps pulling me over for "random" breath tests. same cop every time.

false, a police officers word is all it needs. he has to follow the rules though, and follow you for x amount of time and check your speed against his speedo.

I it that happen to me by a detective in an unmarked Subaru Forrester a year and a half ago.

yeah my mate just got off a speedo matched speeding charge because the speedo on the cop car hadn't been checked in time.

In Queensland they have to be checked every 6 months and this one was out by 4 days lol

Beat this one:

This arsehole i new at school was always hooning around my friends complex (with my friend in the car, they were friends) anyway,
a new cop moved into the area and put flyers into everones mailbox saying who he was and to dob in hoons number plates.

Anyway arsehole is driving around doing nothing wrong (for once) and he gets pulled over for no reason. Cop tells him the story of the fliers and that his plate has come up a bit and so hes going to book him. no surprise there.

but wait

cop then tells him he doesnt no what he can book him for so he tells the arsehole to wait there by his car on the side of the road while he drives 10mins to the nearest police station and finds out what he is able to book him for. Comes back nearly 30mins later. Gives him a $250 fine and 1 point for something or other.

Then tells the kid to stop hooning around.

That is wak. I dont like the guy but thats just crazy.

thats bullshit he could of atleast scaryed the poor kid and let him off because the kid just lost 20mins extra of his life that he aint getting back lol

ive herd stories from mates about cops in SA driving around in shitty commos like the old ones egging ppl on 4 drags then booking them....what would happen if we pulled up next to a marked cop car and egged him on 4 a drag lol thats bullshit honestly they should be following the law and booking us 4 doing the wrong thing and not for doing something they are doing

i like the cops they are there for a reason other than bad mouth us enthusists and call us hoons ect
do we look like homo commadore drivers i dont think so...

but i guess such is life
