Lowering U12, VIP style
« on: Mar 17, 2009, 01:15PM »
First up i'm not sure if this should be in the performance and handling, or the style section.
I am planning on going VIP style on my pintara T. So the ride needs to be loww, but it needs to be legal; and can't be too firm.

At the moment it looks and feels like i'm driving a 4WD, so I think it needs to be lowered at least 3 inches.

The ride is a little soft for me, I wouldn't mind it a bit firmer, but the roads I drive on are CRAP! Example: my 180sx has lowered king springs, and I can feel every bump, thats not gonna be good for a cruiser.

So, what has been peoples experiences with lowering their car and keeping a smooth ride? Spring choices, Shocks, coilovers?  ::)

I heard that the new king springs have different spring rates, soft when cruising and firms up when cornering, anyone tried these compared to the old style?

The standard ride in an s13 is acceptable to me on firmness. I don't really want it any harsher.

nothing.

Just slam it.. legal height is soft.

Wow! A lot of replies.  :)

Kranzy's ride height looks just about spot on for what I want. Super low rears and ultralow fronts. Is ultralow the lowest you can go, coz the front looks just a tad high still. (sorry, picky) By the way, absolutely mint ride mate (hmm, no thumbs up smiley)

The progressive rate springs is what I was talking about, peoples opinions on ride quality with them would be good.

And Kranzy, does your car bottom out at all? is it alright on rough roads still? how you go for scraping up driveways?

To chr1S, I know legal height sucks, but I don't wanna keep getting defected for being way too low than having to swap the stock suspension back in all the time. A little lower than legal I could do though  ;D

Legal height is not VIP, I'm sorry but its true. VIP is dumped, massive rims etc etc.

If you go Kranzy's height that'd be okay depending on the rims you go. Lets not let this turn into a "Hiro VIP thread" which consists of black paint and front lip  ::)

Let us know how you go because many years ago i wanted to go VIP style, will look good  ;)

Yeah, I know. If money was no object i'd just go chuck in some airbags. Might do coilovers in the future if I get that serious into it.

But for now, I'm dumping it as low as I can, Might chuck on some 18s or 19s might fit actually, black mesh with polished lip if I can find them. Cost a bit though. Gonna paint it gun metal gray, polish it to a hell of a nice shine, get some chrome door handles, and Black tint. Also tint the tail lights and all indicators dark.

This isn't a I think i'm gonna do this, then don't. It will happen, it's just gonna take some time.

Don't know about a body kit yet, but I reckon if I go low enough I won't need a massive one, anyway, thats down the track after the other mods.

Got a few pics which were my inspiration.

i have a set of compressed springs you can have for $50.. but they're heat treated (i.e. stiffer) and the ride is VERY harsh lol.

i would suggest ultra low kings all round.. the ride isnt super soft (you wont get that with kings) but its certainly pretty decent.

otherwise, the obvious choice would be airbags.you can get aftermarket custom airbags for the pintara for probably twice the price of springs at full retail (i.e. dont base costs of antrx shop prices as they're cheaper than retail lol) sure its a big outlay, but hell, its worth it!!

anyway, obvious advantages of airbags are

- ride height is changeable.. you can have it slammed or at legal height to keep out of trouble with the po po
- ride comfort is something that will make you jizz in your pants
- if you're into getting respect for random shit you've spent money on.. airbags will get you respect from all the boostcruising wiggas yo
- i will be jealous lol

http://www.autospeed.com.au/cms/A_3034/article.html - some autospeed stuff on airbags.

http://www.airbagman.com.au/ - thats who autospeed recommend

if you got some balls and can figure shit out yourself as far as sizing, compressor sizing and then installing etc etc.. you can save yourself some money buying from reputable ebay sellers (i.e. the ones that actually deal in airbags for a living and sell on ebay for side cash) you'll have to buy from the USA though as airbags arent popular/common in australia, cause lets face it, bogans just dont fuckin get it!

just dont forget to roll the gaurds.. you WILL need to do it!

oh and this is low:

i was going to go airbags in my t, but i dont think they'd go so well with how i like to drive + turbo. if it was non turbs, i reckon i would have bagged it about 2yrs ago.

Yeah, I keep thinking about airbags, can't beat that ride  ;D

Checked out the ones on ebay and some USA sites which stock the struts for the american version of the pinny (can't remember what it's called).

As far as I can see, the most expensive part is air struts, then  it's just a tank, compressor and lines (which don't look too expensive) and a controller.

Well, I don't have the cash yet, but I am strongly considering them in the future, espescially if I can do most of the work myself and get the parts reasonably cheap.

I guess until then, ultralow springs might do, reckon I will need to have a ride with someone who has em so I can compare the ride but.

well apart from that, so far I have tinted my tail lights and front indicators black, and am picking up some 16inch rims on the weekend, I wanted 17 or 18s, but these will do for now, might spend a few days polishing them  :)

As far as I know its legal just needs to be engineered (depending on state)

well apart from that, so far I have tinted my tail lights and front indicators black,

How dark? I'm pretty sure thats a defect bro as depending on how dark it is, someone behind you may not see you stopping... I know safe distance rule lol but you know what I mean... they do look good though on some cars though... :)
Ill fight you. May even throw a bar of soap your way. Maybe a few wax strips and some clip on brembo brake calipers for your fooly sic civic.

Yeah I know about that. It's pretty dark, looks near black when not on, but you can see the tail lights and indicators when they are on though, and the high mount brake light isn't tinted so should be alright. Note: I didn't tint the reverse lights, just in case.
Never had any trouble when I did this with my 180.

i'm pretty sure that the guys i linked to above that autospeed recommend just use your struts that you already have in the car, they just replace the springs with the bags. i might be wrong though, but i'm almost certain thats how it works with all airbags.

Buddyclub P1's I think.

yep they are. i'm told they're not sold anymore but i think thats a load of poo. i think you just cant buy them in white, only bronze or grey.

ok.. so i looked it all up and yeh, they're pricey still.. were more expensive when i bought them. i paid $460 per wheel without tyres, so $1840 all up. at the time most shops were selling them for $600 per wheel - add tyres on top they're rather pricey.

just looked them up - according to the official buddy club site, they dont come in 17x7in anymore (which is what you need for the pinny) 17x8 is the smallets, and rrp is still $490 each.

bit more research lol.. (cause i'm interested :P) the p1's are now limited make, so the price has gone up, also not available in white anymore. the p1 ii's which are slightly dished - which are the ones i wanted but were $700 per rim at the time - i have found them selling for $398 each new for 17x7, p1 qf's whic are lighter again than the p1's are still around $870 per wheel in 17x8in, there is once again no 17x7in.

your best bet is buying 2nd hand, you'll probably find them for about $1000 without tyres or about $1400 with tyres, but its basically good luck finding them in the right offset and size, you need them in 17x7 and a +43 offset. most of the ones for sanle 2nd hand are from silvias and skylines, so wrong bolt pattern, most of the time 9" rear and 8" front (illegal to run different width wheels on fwd on the street, plus too wide anyway) and wrong offset.

You can run silvia rims (stud pattern wise), i used to run stock S13 rims on my pintara (god i miss that car). As you said though most are too wide or too low offset to fit pintara properly. just scan over nissansilvia.com or boostcruising.com, they always have lots of rims for sale.

oh yeh for sure! its just the offset/size combo that might be hard to find.. stud pattern i was referring to skyline kids (and others)
