aftermarket cooling issues
« on: Aug 28, 2008, 04:21PM »
i have a pair of 10" fans in my pintara running off a davies craig thermatic fan swtich (part number 0401 if its of any help)

installation instructions to help explain what i'm doing.

this was running brilliantly for about 6 months, then it just plain stopped.

i have tested that the fans still work by connecting them directly to the battery (which they do), my first port of call was the earth on the relay, which i checked and it seems ok. next up i changed the relay - still no luck.

i was wondering if anyone else had an idea on what i should maybe check, its really a very simple arrangement but i cant figure out where its broken :( its a pain as i need my thermo fans to work! could it be the temperature sensor that has failed? where else should i be looking?

cheers

Do you have a consult cable?? (if you don't you can steal mine)

see if that reads off right ... i think coolant temp is ment to be about 90-95 isn't it??
lol Phantom and I at the wreckers
Me - 'Oi do you have a hammer'
Phantom - 'No, here have an auto-controller' lol

it'll be the thermatic fan switch mate.

Can't you trigger the fans through the OE wiring via a relay?

i do have a consult, but this is an aftermarket setup using a davies craig unit with its own aftermarket temp sensor to control the fans

definitely fans not coming on. temperature obviously shoots up in traffic when the fans would normally kick in, but yes, 100% on  the fans not turning on. I can adjust the switch to turn the fans on anywhere from 40-100 degrees, and even with it set to 40 and having a digital thermometer to double check the temps, the fans dont switch on.

that switch assembly cost me $60 freaken bucks!

i suppose i could rig it up to the OE wiring, i just dont know how. i'm a bit dumb with electrics, hence the thread  ::) i'll have to look into it.. maybe someone like jono can come to the rescue?  :D

That'll use the oem settings.

Kranzy would know more about wiring fans up to the factory wiring.

I'm sure I could work it out given some time, diagrams and a test light though.

I just looked at the manual you posted up.

85 and 86 on the relay need 12 v across them to turn the relay on. One should be grounded, the other should run through that thermo switch. Try touching a piece of wire between the + battery terminal and the thermo switch pin on the relay. The relay should click and your fans should turn on. If this happens your thermo switch either doesn't work or isn't getting power.

If the relay clicks but the fans don't come on then it could be the fuse in the wire between the battery and the relay, the relay itself (sometimes they get shit built up on the contacts inside them) or the ground wire on the fans.

If the relay doesn't click when it's got 12v across pins 85 and 86 then the relay is stuffed.

This happened to my mates hilux when we hit up the 4wding, I'm not sure if it's davies craig however he touched the temp sensor probe and for some reason they came back on, weird!
