1st gear buggered on a U12?
« on: Jun 5, 2008, 11:48AM »
Hi,
Over a few weeks my first gear has been deteriorating. Now I cannot even get it into gear. When I try to take off in 1st it doesnt engage and just makes a horrible grinding noise. The reverse is playing up too. It usually takes a few trys to get it into gear or I have to engage second before it will allow me to reverse.
Im wondering if they are interconnected.
Any help would be appreciated as I dont know much about gear boxes and front wheel drives.
Thanks

this happened in my first u12, first gear was pushed right off the spindle.. can only be fixed by replacing the gearset, or the whole box. stop doing big launches and you'll be right..

as for reverse, has happened to a lot of people i know, but in other cars, basically learn to completely stop before you change from reverse to first or first to reverse, your new gearbox will love you for it.

also they're not at all cheap to fix, but mine was about 7-8yrs ago.

Thanks,
that makes a bit of sense.
Are there any other possibilities?
It seems a bit odd that reverse is deteriorating as well.
Cheers

First and reverse use the same synchro ring, and i think selector fork.

Major gearbox surgery is, I am afraid, the diagnosis
