Insulating front doors
« on: Apr 25, 2003, 09:24PM »
I finally decided to insulate my front doors after getting the idea from one of sssgtr's posts (thanks a lot). Any the whole deal is simple enough:
Simply remove front door armrests, window window and door lever surrounds.
Remove door trim.
Remove plastic sealing sheet.
Carefully remove speaker.
Cut a rectangle approximately 300x600x15mm and double it over.
Then just JAM IT IN THERE!! (carefully!!)
There's a side intrusion bar that the foam can be wedged under, and it seems to hold it quite tightly. Also this keeps the foam out of the way of the window when it is would down.

Thanks to this simple modification, sound is now deeper and clearer inside the car, and there is no annoying rattle from the outside.

Yeah it's improved the sound quality throughout the range, and since there's no longer any vibration, it's a lot better all the way through.  ;)

I used a matress underlay material like you'd use in a swag. It was about 15mm thick.

RichTRX, did your window winder handles (what do I call them?) rattle a little with bass before you insulated your door?

The round part on the end of mine rattles and gives me the shits...

Yeah... the door rattled, the door mirrors used to pulse, which was actually interesting, and it used to make a horrible virbrating noise.

Now, no noise, everything is nice and quiet.

However, the interior trim now vibrates with the insulation, because the bass has nowhere to go. I'll cut some bass reflex holes in there some time. I'm thinking of cutting them behind the speaker grille panel on the door trim.
