I have a pioneer head unit with polk audio 6x9's in a custom made parcel shelf and some kenwood 6 inch 3-ways in the front. All Powered by a 4ch kenwood amp - sounds nice ;) No need for sub-canines!

                           *A mixed bag really*

I'm onto my second head unit, both have been Sony.  the one I've got at the moment is some 52Wx4 thing with lights and a remote control and stuff (very technical)

I've got 200w Pioneer 6x6 in the parcel, these are replacements for my 240W 6x9 polks which are no longer with us.

In the front I had 6x4 Phillips, which replaced the original 6x4 pieces of crap.  now I've 6.5 200w Alpine splits which are pretty tidy.

Both my subs are long gone, but they were Kenwood 12's run by a Sony 4 channel and a Kenwood 2 channel.

I'm only running a cheap and nasty 2 channel at the moment, but it is actaully quite good.

You reckon you got a mixed bag of stuff.

I'm actually on to my 3rd head unit. The polks have been in for a while now but the first setup I had was just about all pioneer stuff - 2CH amp, 6x9s, different head unit to above but still pioneer...was ok but better now...

i have a jvc 4x35w head unit... cant think of the model number, its my 2nd, the previous was a kenwood 4x30w tape deck.

i have kenwood 6" 140w 3 ways in the front doors and pioneer 6" 130w 3 ways in a custom parcel tray.

i have a jbl gt series 12" sub which is powered by one of those 222w sony explod amps.

a 260w 4 channel kenwood amp powers the other 4 speakers.

i'm tossing up between putting either 8" subs/splits or 6" pioneer splits in the front doors & then moving the kenwoods to the parcel tray. and if i get the splits in the front, i'll probably bridge the 4 channels of the kenwood amp to 2 channels & run the speakers in the parcel tray off the head unit.

i got:

Alpine head unit 4x45w

6x4 jbl g series 2 way speakers up front

6.5'' apline speakers 2 way at the rear

One 12'' jaycar response carbon fibre sub in a matched box

one 2x100wrms jaycar amp (bridged to like 230rms or sumthin)

pretty basic, but i think the head unit makes all the difference, as the sub is the only speaker that runs off the amp.. and the other 4 speakers have excellent clarity for just running off the head unit.

Your just showing off weseal cause yours is the loudest.
:P
haha.as for my stereo, Its pretty basic.....but does the job. Its loud, but I wanted more of an influence on sound clarity, imaging than bass. No offence intended, but up here in sydney, Youre a wanker if you drive around with your stereo up loud, and all you hear is bass. Thats why, When I have mine up loud....at least you can hear the lyrics too! Its kinda like, hey, lets spend heaps of money on a stereo cause I drive a slow car or a rice car!!! hahaha I nice all round package is good. I spent round $1500 for mine and wouldnt change a thing - mates rates though.....and I think that is still too much.
As for advertising my stereo on here.........most of you guys know what it is! Cd Deck.......splits, 6inch, Amps and 12 inch sub. The perfect system.

If......youre refering to the showing off quote I said to weseal....that was a joke. But ill give you an example why I said it. I said he was showing off...because we all know he has the biggest, loudest, best stereo out of us all. So, he just wanted an excuse to let us know.
If you read his post, you will also note every component in his stereo, their make, and power handling. A lot fo info! Thus, the showing off joke contiues!

As for me..........if you think Im contradictig myself by breifly stating what my car stereo consists of, by your over intelligent post of 'hmmmm' I think you are mistaken. But thanx for the effort! Keep up the good work!

People probably know what I've got but anyways....

Pioneer single cd deck
Jaycar 15 band L/R EQ
Sony 4x50WRMS purple series amp (but bridged at 130RMS for sub, and running 2 ohm load at 62.5WRMS for the 4 speakers)
PPI 6 1/2 splits in front (carbon fibre woofer/titanium tweeter)
PPI 4x6 coaxials in rear (carbon fibre woofer/titanium swivel tweeter)
Kicker 10 sub (very soon will change).

Probably not much more than $1500 in components and all home installed to say $$$. Suits me fine.

oh...the good old tounge and cheek trick hey? That usually works better when you add a little face to the comment, or in your case, cut and paste. like  :) or  ;) or  :D or ;D or  >:( or  :( or  :o or  8) or  ??? or  ::) or  :P or :-[ or  :-X or  :-/ or  :-* or  :'( they are just a few.
Kinda makes it eaiser to tell when youre joking or not....adds to the effect of the whole tounge and cheek gag, if you know what I mean :P Otherwise, it pretty difficult, if not impossible to work out the tone for written text.
EG. You are a fucken idiot

well i got a clarion dx515 head unit (single load cd player)
2x focal 165CA coax 6 1/4" front speakers (farkin nuts!)

some shitty pieces of junk for noise fill in the back.

Balupunkt mpa680 55X4 rms amp

my focus too is on sound quality and not "bangin bullshit"

so in the near future i'll be adding another pair of 165ca's, an access line 13" focal sub, another amp for this sub, and probably will replace my blaupunkt for something better.

whats with a 13inch sub? Do only focal makes these sizes? Why the size difference? I thought, most brans were 8, 10, 12, 15, 18 or even 21!!! Whats with the 13inch? Anyone know why focal went for this size?

JVC MP3 deck (yes, the good one)
4 x 6.5" JBL's (one set 2 way, other 3way)
Jaycar 4x50wrms amp
Phoenix Gold XS2200 2x100wrms
Phoenix Gold QX10 sub (10")

Later changing fronts to Focal 5 1/4" 2 way splits (Polyglass)
Phoenix Gold Tantrum series 4x50wrms amp ($$$$!!)
Changing sub config to a fibreglass box in spare wheel well (might go with another 10").

Lotsa sound deadening in front doors, and more to come. All up, could've been cranking over high 13's in the qtr by now.  Man i'm dumb....

FYI: Subs sound best when they are facing towards the rear of the vehicle as low frequencies improve in loudness over greater distances. Also as subs are non-directional speakers, the rear seat doesn't need to be down.

Ive got:
JVC Mini Disc & CD Head Unit
180W 6" Kenwood Splits in front doors
Pioneer 260W 6x9" on rear parcel shelf
JL Audio 300W 10" Sub in non-ported box
Kenwood 4-channel 600W amp (running speakers)
Audioline 2-channel 600W amp (running sub)

Subjective IMHO, depends on sub, enclosure, car harmonics, setup etc etc. Subs tend to produce more volume when positioned at the rear of the car for the reason you outlined, whether or not they are facing towards the rear or the front. Its good to experiment with position when putting in a sub.

Oh also TRXRTD...I meant to ask u, with your TRX kit, did it come with the front mudguards as well or did u buy these seperately?

if i have my sub facing forwards, and i turn up the music too loud, i need the seat down otherwise it goes all muddy cause the air bounces off the back of the seat, and then hits the sub while its trying to hit another beat... does that make sense? i know what i mean..

as for focal subs.. i think they make odd sizes in subs thru-out their range... 9", 11" 13" and 16"

jvc make a 32" sub... will only fit in a ute tray.

also, on subs, the whole idea of have the sub rearward firing is called "rear loading" for all the reasons mentioned previously... its also a tried and test way of raising the SPL level in most (if not all) sedans.

ive got
Pioneer 4x50W DEHP-5450 (brand newy)
and only
JBL gt sereies 6x4's in the front
220w pioneer 6x9's in rear

but this week or next i get a

12" soundstream sub
4 channel amp (not even sure of brand)
in custom carpeted box

i have a GLi, no fold down seat, but looking from the boot, the back of the seat is just foam. (like you could punch it hard and the person sitting on the back seat would definetely feel it ;))

So i have been told that it might be best to face the sub towards the front of the car, because there is nothing hard for the sound to travel through??
is this right??
and does anyone actually know what i am talking about with the pintaras without fold down seats? executive and GLi owners...

It consists of

4X52W Xplod head unit (on special)

6X9 230W Xplod 3 way speakers (on special) in a stock standard shitty parcel shelf

and these really awesome speakers in the front they are soooo good that if you turn the volume up a fraction they distort!!

I love the sound of distortion!!

AS YOU MAY NOTICE I AM BEING VERY SARCASTIC

Just as long as my car can play my Dire Straits CD I dont care what happens!!!

OH YEAH AND YOU ARE ALL KNOBS!!!

well i dont care how much you can get focal polyglass splits for because i dont even know what focal polyglass splits are!! all i care about is if dire straits sounds good!! and it sounds bloody good on my sony xplod splits so you didnt rain on my parade cos i dont give a shit about brand names!!

on the other hand everyone i installed my splits and they sound really good thanks joczy for telling me a while back how to get the door trim off it was a real big help  ;)

I installed them by taking the other ones out obviously using the white peice of plastic already there and mounting a 6inch mdf mounting ring to the plastic and through to the door

my tweeter is situated just above the speaker pod in the corner very discreet and still with good quality sound

well thanx guys for helping me i think i am in love with these new speakers!!

cheers again dickbrains

oh yeah GLItimmy the sound waves are absorbed more by softer surfaces espescially foam you will hear it alright it is just the quality i would be worried about sound doesnt like to travel through anything as by hitting something it loses momentum and therefore loses its intensity

i think we all need to go back to physics class!!

i am probably wrong considering i failed every single assessment in yr11 and 12 physics i am so dumb ;D

A good judgement of this is when you HAVE NO BACK SEAT IN A SEDAN BECASUE THE SPEAKER BOX IS THERE!!!!

I didn't HAVE to take the seat out i just did  :D cause as people have said it sounds better and it is louder ;)
Quote
i need the seat down otherwise it goes all muddy cause the air bounces off the back of the seat

the sound waves are absorbed more by softer surfaces espescially foam you will hear it alright it is just the quality i would be worried about sound doesnt like to travel through anything as by hitting something it loses momentum and therefore loses its intensity

i realise the whole sound absorbtion thing, that is not why i need my seat down. its hard to explain in words. but i know what i mean.

sometimes the cone of the sub will hit the back of the seat too.

i'm getting sick of smartare comments in threads too. useless posts/threads will be deleted from now on.

if your sub is hitting the back of the seat every now and then, you could always move it back a couple of cm's?

or a "re box" of the sub making the side the sub is actually mounted into on an angle so its fireing up slightly?

did u make the box yourself or buy it with the sub? need to be careful when buying sub and box packages because often the box is too big for the sub, which will make the cone of the sub move far to much than its designed for due to pressures/air movement etc. inside the box.
its all about volumes ;)

just as thought...

i designed the box to the manufacturer's specs to within 250ml (.25litres) of their recommended size & my dad made it up for me. so i think we did a good job, as its within the size of less than a coke can of their specs. it was a difficult process though, as the required size for my sub using a sealed enclosure is only 27 litres.

the box is angled to match the incline of the back of the seat. its easy enough to pull the seat down. and it only hits the back of the seat when the stereo is excessivly loud, which doesnt happen often. its not a big problem.

what i meant with the whole muffling/muddy sound sometimes occuring, is when the cone is on a positive excursion (moving toward the seat) it pushed air... this air hits the seat, and has to go somewhere, while the sub has made its negative excursion (away from the seat) and is about to begin its next positive excursion, some of the air that originally was belted up against the back of the seat sometimes bounces back off the seat & towards the sub cone again, therefore, while the sub is making a positive excursion, some of the air wants to force it on a negative excursion, therefore, making the note inclomplete/distorted. does that make sense?

In about a month or so i'll be doing something similar to this:

Except i'll be running just one 10", with a fake floor and my spare wheel on top of the floor in a custom box for easier access.

-Sony Xplod 4x52w CD head unit
-Xplod 6.5" 200w 3 way at the rear
-Xplod 6.5" 130w 2-way at the front
-Sony 222w amp.

Puts out real good sound too, but you can't crank it too hard or the speakers distort big time.

I like to carry stuff in my boot when I need to, so for that reason I haven't got a sub yet.

Talking sub enclosures have you tried turning the sub box around so the sub faces towards the tail lights

Uses the whole boot as an enclosure then and i can tell you from personal experience that the bass is a LOT deeper

Try it if you don`t believe me but i`ll hate to say i told you so when you come back on and tell me i`m right

Ohh and if this has already been mentioned on this thread then i apologise as i didn`t read whole thread

i reckon it depends on da subs and whats in the boot. coz with my first sub i ever had (a 10"), it sounded heaps better facing toward the back, but with the two 12s i got now, i cant really tell the diff either way, so i juz face them towards the seats (to avoid damage from objects in the boot n sh!t)

update on my system.

head unit:
clarion dx515

speakers
2 pairs of Focal 165ca 6" coax speakers (in door and in custom parcel shelf)

sub:
focal access line 33a (33cm or 13" sub) in custom 35ltr box (deadened with brown bread and dacron)

amps:
blaupunkt mpa680 amp (4x55W/2x150Wrms - MAX OUTPUT=680W) for my speakers
JBL 180.2 amp for the sub (Output 2 Ohms: 180W x 2) - however cos my rca outs on my head unit are only 2volt, my amp isnt running at its peak.. 4volt is best option to get maximum power out of ya amp.

cable:
oxygen free pure copper gold plated rca's (2x5meter)
focal and stinger speaker cable
4gage main power from battery, distribution block splits this up into 2x8 gage cables which go straight into the amps (spade connectors crimpped into the blaupunkt cos of the connection point)

i installed it all myself.
feel free to have a listen and test her out..

i love my focal gear.. pity the top end stuff is stupidly expensive :(

:D
