Hi all,
Just found this site through someone on the pulsar forums. I have owned my U13 series II attesa for around 4 years now, and have never had any problems with it. Current mods are:

* 350hp turbo
* 600cc injectors
* gtr fuel pump
* bar and plate intercooler
* z32 afm
* blitz dual sbc boost controller
* 3" exhaust
* chipped ecu.
* Nissan Consult digital dash.

Im happy to try and help any other attesa owners here. I also have a yahoo based mailing list going with many other attesa owners on there too.

you talking about performance or the digital dash? The digital dash works on any nissan from around 89 to 2000, including the HNU12

IF it has the consult port it should work. I know that the HNU12 attesa has the port, not sure with the aussie delivered pintaras and corsairs though.

You have listed that it works on a 240sx USDM... so thats a KA24E isn't it?

I'm going to check my ATTESA for the port (CA18DET).

hey that looks cool
too bad you cant use it on the ca18 but budgie you can buy the apexi power fc, if you can find one...it can control every engine parameter with the hand controller plus monitor 8 channels simultaneously an have a hold function but sadly it costs more than 300 but best of all its a plug and play standalone computer.

hey ive just discovered this site on my mates computer. unfortunately im not online myself  :(. anyway i am a very proud (and happy) owner of a 1992 u13 sss attesa 5spd. ive had it for 18 months sofar and will NEVER get rid of it. sofar all it has is a 3" stainless- turbo back, bigger front-mount,single plate brass button (w/sprung centre), 16" enkeis with eagle nct-5's(?)  and 'some tweaking' to produce 179hp atw. just posting to say hi and to ask if your car is auto or man. ive been told that the man can only handle around 350hp (flywheel) reliably before things go south. launghing at 4000rpm it bogs down, i dont launch due to cluch replacement being an engine out ($1100-) plus clutch! your beast runs a 350hp turbo- hows the 'box handling it? hows the lag with that size blower? sorry for crapping on so much, im just interested in talking to people who know what a great car is.

p.s.     dont you love blowing v8 knuckle-draggers away!

My car is a manual, and the clutch slips badly when launching, which is cheap g/box insurance! I will only bother upgrading the clutch when the clutch is completely gone. At the moment i can drive it around without a problem. So with that in mind, the g/box handles it OK, because the clutch slips when heaps of torque is pushed through it.

As far as lag goes, i dont really notice it. The car was off the road for around a month while i was upgrading the turbo, so i cant really give you a before and after comparison. I dont think it's laggy though.

hi good to see another owner out there (although to be honest i'm happy it's rare to meet another owner in a sense).

my unfortunate personal experience is the gearbox is more likely to die from abuse rather than outright power. i've only got a 3" exhaust, front mount and a bit more boost and i killed my gearbox. i strongly recommend you take a look in the bluebirdattesa yahoo group as there has been a lot of discussion re gearboxes.

i've had no car for 2 months now and should be getting my gearbox back soon, been down south getting a ppg gearset installed (ouchie$). like a lot of people who've broken boxes i had to decide whether to just throw a 2nd hand one in, or go all out. i chose all out, because i decided that with a standard box i'd spend too much time worrying about it.

my biggest recommendation: shift slowly, and ensure is 100% in gear before getting on the power. i believe i shift a little quick sometimes, and when my gearbox went i was driving normal but kinda tired and believe i may not have put in gear 100%. i know two gtir owners who've had a similar thing happen (same gearbox more or less).

dont cry when you look at the gearbox pics :) http://www.clubpoint.net/bluebird/

so did my financial happiness :(

right now i'm waiting on the place with the gb to get back to me, ensuring it's all still on schedule. i really want it back by the end of this month but i doubt it'll happen, probably early next month. then back in on the next available weekend.

when the gearbox went, i shifted up through the gears like normal, then back down the gears and when i let the clutch up in 2nd as i came into a round about, it was a nice loud click-click type sound constantly. other gears worked fine but you could hear a slight click in them, and shifting into 2nd felt 'odd' but not terrible.

i wasn't too annoyed cos i was expecting it to go, and kinda laughed how it turned out to be 2nd gear that let go, not 1st from all the launches at the drags. i was annoyed however finding out it'd take 8 weeks for the gearset.

standard gearboxes hold up allright up to about 14psi of boost, then they start to shit emselves, so a new gearset would be on the cards then.

as for clutches a super single or a twin plate is the only way to go or u'll be replacing clutches every year or two. i have an upgraded exedy clutch in mine but i have to replace it soon, been in for about 2 years at the moment.

Since our gearboxes are essentially the same , ie rs5f50a/v , do these PAR gearsets fit ca18det or are advertised as such?
Whats the cost?

i'm getting a ppg straight cut syncro box

par was cheaper (probably $1000-$1500 cheaper) but i decided to go with ppg anyway. ppg box also includes upgraded 3rd/4th selector fork.

i still haven't got the box back yet :( cos ppg have had a massive backlog of work to get done apparently. i will be fairly annoyed if i dont have it back by around may 13 etc cos i'd like to put it back in that weekend.

the gearset is the gtir gearset which appears to be identical. however as the box builder is yet to receive the gearset, he cannot be 100% sure yet. both ppg and the builder however believe it's identical going from photos of internals.

i have to admit i was awefully tempted to throw a 2nd hand box in and just sell the car off, but upon thinking of another type of car to buy, nothing really apealed to me.

Hello
Its been a while...anyway just wanted to let you all know that my gearbox 'died' at the end of june.Its been off the road since...  >:( :( ;D 8) :-[ .Apparently it was a mainshaft bearing that broke and fell into a place that stopped selection of 1 and 2 gear.Think i did it dragging a gen3 ute... i rushed the 1-2 change(i think).Two weeks later i couldnt change gears :(. At least i 'KILLED' that pushrod... ;). Anyway the 'box is out now and hopefully its back on the road in 3-4 weeks. I thought that maybe putting crap tyres on it would help the driveline,but compromise handling. Good to read the new(old) replies,will try to stay in touch.

Hello again
Just a short note to say i finally got my car back after three and a half months...
its good to have wheels again,though i am considering selling it now because of the (relatively) fragile nature of the gearbox...
what do you guys out there think?
bye for now

i've considered the ppg option and im'm now at the stage of having to choose between keeping the 'bird and spending up big on it,or just taking the plunge and going the r-32 gtr road.i'd like to keep the 'bird because it attracts no attention and gets 'the job' done-if you know what i mean...
the missus has a '95 180sx and there are so many meathead 'p' platers in commondores (not a typo) who hassle you.imagine what it'd be like in a gtr. any ideas or opinions would be welcome...

just thought of something else. 8) when the gearbox went,it was because of a bearing failure.even if i go for a ppg gearset,whats to say another bearing or the like wont die.i know thats the price i/we pay do drive hi-po cars, but it just makes me  :'( when it happens...by the way what have any of you heard of or know about the whiteline kits available for the u13 (the works as it was referred to in hpi  awhile back).
does anybody know what has happened to the mag 'speed'.i didnt think it was a bad read...

When gearbox bearings get worn, they die fast, especially with harsh treatment. I think its something to do with the torque on the shaft minutley twisting it. Bracing the gearbox and new bearings should make for a relativley strong box.
I havent heard of anybody stripping teeth on a rebuilt box yet...........

hello again
what is involved in 'bracing the gearbox'? also, what benefits can be gained from using high-quality trans fluids. what about oil coolers?
its great to have the old girl back on the road,but its got crappy 15" taxi-tyres on it (from the 'missus 180),so il'll have to change them back over soon.what does anybody know about those cheap wheel and tyre packages going around for about 1k?
see-ya soon

You can make an oil cooler system for the manual gearbox by building a filter, pump etc.. into the gearbox and using an engine oil cooler. I dont think this is nessacary in 95% of cases. Thinner oil (yet strong film) is best for launching , light shockproof oil is nice. Redline MT-90 has served me well ,ive launched that box so many times and its still going yet its syncro's are about done (they were when i got the car too). Bracing of the outer casing improves the gearbox'es strength markedly , i seriously doubt the hardness of the gearset is the problem , id say it could do with being harder, but not nessacarily 8x as hard like with a PPG gearset.

gearboxes break in a lot of different ways: teeth breaking, whole gears stripping, shafts breaking, cases cracking, lubrication issues, broken synchros, selector forks bending/breaking, hubs breaking, bearings failing/wearing.

take your pick

I guess 4wd boxes are principally more likeley to break. My guess is teeth break due to shaft twisting or worn bearing...... Id like to know whats the most common breakage for our boxes and cause...

well the break i had where a couple of teeth on second were broken off, all gearbox bearings were still perfect as were all shafts, and the casing too. it drove ok in other gears with a slight sound, and made a loud clicking sound in 2nd (and if i put my foot down in 2nd it probably would have ripped all the teeth off due to the shock force of jumping a couple of teeth in effect).

but yes 4wd boxes more likely to break, and regardless of teeth size also more likely to break than GTR boxes for example (a GTR even on a hard launche is still 4wd for a bit first so doesn't normally have the massive shock force involved, plus the front diff is open). it's gearboxes in Evos running slicks all round that are really shining through and showing their strength, but again they normally only last so long.

Personally i dont know if the evo boxes are all that mighty , ive seen a stock evo 6 blow one all over the ground on all standard gear, in the wet too.

The gearset you have now should be indestructable if all other things are sufficient...?
