Altenator?
« on: Feb 3, 2003, 10:38AM »
ey all, i may have too much doof doof happening - my battery dies WAY too easily. EVen when idling, the voltages goes down to about 11v, sometimes 10. although when the cars going its all fine. I was juz curious whether an altenator swap may be benificial or stiff cheese? I got da battery tested and thats all sweet n sh!t.

Its been like that for ages, but cbf changing anything. U12s have a 70 amp alt i think? i got a GLi btw.

VX Calais' have a 140 amp alt, gimme!  >:(

Does it only drop to 10 - 11 Volts when u're cranking ur doof doof music?? or all the time?? That's some serious current being pulled if u're getting that much voltage drop... Maybe invest in a bigger battery...  Check ur idle too, if it's too low the alternator wont be generating much current.

sometimes my idle goes down to 600. that cant be good, but i dunno and im not game enough to adjust the idle myself. ill probly stuff it up?

goes down to 10v when its at reasonable volume. (bass is what drains it) i got two 12s running in the back.

I had same problem in one of my old cars with a big stereo

Pull the stereo out - This will fix it  8)
If you don`t want to do this then it might be easier to put bigger alternator in like i did
Car stereo`s draw a LOT of power from your battery, if the alternator can not keep up with the current being drawn then you`ll end up with flat battery (eventually)

My car used to stall when taking off from traffic lights if i wasn`t careful and then i`d need someone with jumperleads to come and get me going again

After i put new alternator in there was no problems

could always invest in a deep cycle battery

made to take a pounding from ya car stereo - can buy them from car audio places

:)

serious? where? JB n stuff?

they sound pricey though..
if its more than $150, the new alternator may still prove better
