Won't Start Hot (faulty starter motor confirmed)
« on: Jun 29, 2008, 11:39AM »
all right guys, looking for some ideas as to what could be the cause.

in the mornings my car starts fine, however if I drive it around for a bit and get the engine up to temp, when I turn it off and try to turn it on again nothing happens - the starter does nothing no noise, no anything. Leave it and come back a few hours later and it will start fine first time!

At first i though it was water splashing up onto the inhibitor switch - but it has happened a few times now in the dry.

Then I thought it was immobilizer related - but why would it only not work when the engine is hot?

Consult shows 55 (no errors)

I'm pretty stumped.

faulty starter motor or starter motor connections perhaps? get down there and check the ring terminal's are on ok. also the relay for the starter motor could be sticking. bring it around if you want and I can stick a multimeter in a few places, check the keybarrel/relays etc.

yeah, check if its getting power to the starter exciter wire when it wont crank. this will rule out immobiliser/ inhibitor switch problems.

allright, now it just won't start at all :(

I'm thinking starter motor/wire grounding out somewhere - will investigate later this week.

If its fuel pump the engine will still turn over but wont start. If its not cranking at all, as in the engine isnt even trying to start it  won be fuel pump.

relays are all clicking as they should when I turn the key.

I'm going to try and get a look at the starter wiring tomorrow morning.

doesn't mean they aren't playing up.. you'll know if you can read 12v at the starter i guess..

If you are getting power to the starter solenoid, chances are that the problem is that the high current contacts in the back of the solenoid are stuffed. these are the contacts that rouet the power to the starter motor itself.

I changed these in our Toyota Surf. Easy enough to do once the starter motor is out of the car...

I can't imagine the nissan starter motor would be too much different???

One question though... Can you hear the starter solenoid click/clunk as you rurn the key?

all-right, starter is buggered. Is it the same as sr20de pulsars? or unique to awd sr20's?

going to see my mechanic tomorrow morning to talk starter motor and manual conversion.

to answer your question greenbird, when I turn the key nothing happens at the engine.

I got one if you want here bro..
Don't let the opinions of the average man sway you. Dream, and he thinks you're crazy. Succeed, and he thinks you're lucky. Acquire wealth, and he thinks you're greedy. Pay no attention. He simply doesn't understand.
