WINDSCREEN REPLACEMENT
« on: Jan 3, 2010, 10:39AM »
How hard/easy is it to replace a windscreen in a u12. Is it a hard process as I havent replaced one before. Also, will a u12 sedan windscreen fit in a u12 hatch? Got done for a very badly cracked windscreen so i'm hoping I can take the one from my sedan and put it on the hatch.

take your time and have a mate to help . wire the glass out, the side moldings pop off easy as clean the glass you are going to put in with glass cleaner  1st then the black area down with brake cleaner  get sum foam dam ( 4.5 mm ) run it bout 15mm from the edge of the glass and make the bead of glue bout 10mm tall job done  :) will check at work if the they are the same size tape the glass to the roof after its in and don't move the car of hours as there isn't load stops in a u12 . the job should take round an hour - two at the most heat gun the top molding as some times they don't want to come out

I personally think its a pretty delicate job.  Just to get the existing windsceens out in one piece is reasonably hard.  Do not try to pry it off at all, go around with the wire or blade carefully.
Budget for a new one just in case something goes wrong.  If you ever watch a pro they are amazing and make it look so much easier than it is... 20min later they are done.

I was going to do it once, thought I had cut all the glue, but clearly not... basically I sat in the car with feet against windsreen to help it out... FAIL.

I paid for obrien's glass to replace mine... twit put it in crooked so the external trim dosn't sit in any more, so he glued them down.  he also broke clips.  after having another go at it under warranty they still couldn't get it in right.  imo don't use them.

Just FYI for everyone, supercheap sell a $30 windscreen seal cutter exactly like this (made by TFT tools):

I just used one on the weekend to remove a front and rear windscreen, rear was hardest by far to cut the seal without damaging the glass, plus the blade knocked off one of the spade connections to the demister.

the wire method would be much easier in future...
