Non-sub system ?
« on: Apr 12, 2003, 03:45PM »
Could you guys recommend the best brands and types of speakers to use if I was to just run 4 speakers and a head unit ? I really cant afford to have an amp and subs etc.  If YOU had to just have the 4 speakers and a head, what would YOU do ?

your head unit would have to be super!

im not exactly sure what the best 6x9s are off the head unit, i've been told pioneer 3 ways sound pretty good as do their 4ways if your thinking about upgrading later on.....

boston speakers are supposed to be the best 6x9s avail on the market but being on a budget, it was out of my price range =(

go into a shop and have a look at some prices.... or if your game enough to buy 2nd hand stuff look @ www.trading-post.com.au
What do ralliart do??? make stickers???

i would go a pioneer 50x4 head unit.

saw the best special the other day.
brand new 50W x 4 MP3/CD pioneer deck that looked sweeeeet! was being sold as a package with pioneer 3 ways 220W all up for $430!

in my pintara i had these same pioneer speakers and JBL 6x4s being run off a pioneer 50 x 4 deck and it sounded really good. pretty good bass from the back, really good treble and clarity from the front  ;D

2.0L 4 -------> 3.0L 6. Does this mean a 4.0L 8 next?? or back to a 2.0L......turbo!

if ur not gonna get a sub or amp, i recommend that u definitely get 6x9s in the rear for bass. grab some splits for the front so u get some even clarity.
jaycar have some pretty good splits - $79 for a good pair, or $200 for the kevlars. 6x9s u can grab anywhere, just look around. i recommend 3-ways as minimum for the 6x9s.

once again i use my mates example.... purely because the sound he gets is awesome...

he got a Siemens VDO high quality head unit, let me know if you want the model, its 4x45w i think.... but dont let that fool you....
has (i THINK) 5 inch splits in the front, 6.25" in the back, the back is kenwood, cant remember the fronts, but i can find out for you if you want, no dramas.... all up about $700 installed, but shit it sounds so good!!

That $700 sounds like a good idea ! As I said, Im not worried about having it blowing my ear drums, as long as it can handle regular bass and doesnt distort with a little bit of volume Im happy. Would 7x10 3 ways be better for the back then 6x9 ? Are 4 ways better still ? Cheers ! BTW, do those VDO HU have a website ? And as for how much I want to spend, $700 is around what Im looking at

7x10s u may have a prob fitting in the parcel shelf. go with the 6x9s, much easier! as for 4-ways? 3-way or 4 way is good. the 4th way is a super tweeter for extra claity in treble notes, but its not essential and i dont recommend it honestly when you compare the prices.
I have a VDO h/u too, theyre mad, they got so many features! last years model. $650 when new, u can pick them up for around $300 now (JB HIFI)

Heres a rough example of the possible parts and prices:
- VDO 45x5 h/u $300 (JB HIFI)
- 3-way Pioneer 220w 6x9 - $110 (STRATHFIELD OR JB)
- Jaycar Kevlar splits 80/50w RMS $200

TOTAL : $610  ;D

The only splits I can see at  jaycar.com.au are only $80, that sound right ? And yeah that looks sweet ! Does VDO have a website ?

type the keyword "kevlar" in the search at: jarcar.com.au
the $80 splits are good, their recently released as well, but ill leave it you to decide! (Focal make kevlar splits @ $850)

yeah VDO has their own website: http://www.vdodayton.com/
it probably wont have last years stock on the site though.
my headunit is the "CD3200"

I would look at either Alpine or Pioneer head unit with alpine splits up front and set of JBL 8 inch 3 ways in rear

Yes JBL do make a 8inch speaker - sounds pretty good to
Being 8 inch it supplies quite a bit of bass so at moderate volumes with bass turned up it would sound like it had a sub
What is the point of a signature, who REALLY reads it??

BlakeyBoyR,

I'm running the following-

JVC KD-SX985 (50x4) MP3 Headunit
Clarion SRS1724 6.5" splits in the doors.
Kenwood KFC-1668S 6.5" 2-ways in the parcel shelf

Headunit was $400, splits $140 and 2-ways were $84 (thats all going back a while though).  A nice cheap system, sub and amp is the only thing missing now.
dont piss me off with your pillarless shit captain snappy wrist

Hi i'm the guy imaspy is talking about with the vdo and stuff...the fact that its all in a better car than you guys have is another matter (hehe j/k).

I'm running vdo 4x40watt head unit which is damn good! its this one: http://www2.vdo.com/vdo/end_consumer/ec_product.aspx?a=&ID=24
The front splits are Hertz 6.5 inch and are very good too. something from this range: http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/eng/f_categoria.asp?id=5&idcat=14
And the rear is Kenwood 6.25 inch 3 way.

The setup is great, it can be cranked without any real loss of sound quality... the only thing it lacks is some really deep bass that you'd get from a sub. But it's still mad bass for what it is!! Thats why you get a good new head unit because some time down the track you might have the money to get yourself a nice amp and sub and your head unit will already have dual rca's...piece of piss.
