Hello, My name is idiot because last night; I tryed to start my nice corsair ghia in gear, it lurched forward and started, I jumped on the brakes but got the accellerator aswell, it went over a 30cm square parking kerb and screamed towards the brick wall just a metre away. Then it struck the wall.

I only just bought the car the day before and was just getting used to having a nice car

I reversed it up, totally devestated and checked the damage:

Drivers side light smashed, drivers side indicator lens smashed, front gaurd buckled and pushed askew and scratched to hell.

I am lucky that appears to be all, mechanically it seems ok. the bonnet is all good and the radiator is untouched.

It took a long time today to find a front light and then it costed $110, I cant find a whole front gaurd anywhere yet, or an indicator.

I am in Adelaide if anyone has a front gaurd or just the indicator.

Is the front gaurd different between models? Like is the hatch diff from a sedan, or ghia diff from a gl, or corsair diff from a pintara? are any intercompatible?

well im just about to wreck a corsair, how much can you pay me for a bumper/gaurd/indicator?

check your radiator bar for small bends and warps too. important. good luck with fixing.

I think he meant it as in he tried to start his car but it was in gear...thats how i read it anyway.

Finding parts for your car shouldn't be tooo hard, but if all else fails you might be able to do a Pintara front end conversion

The guards are the same for all Corsairs, right through the range, and the indicator lenses are the same as U12 Pintaras.

As imaspy said, check the metal bumper reinforcment bar to see if it's still straight. To do this you need to remove the plastic bumper bar skin. The procedure for that is shown in the Corsair FSM (service manual) found in the FAQs board of this site.

Thanks for replies,
I have got it as straight as I can without replacing the bumper

The metal thingy that attaches the bumper the the car was all bent and twisted, so I did what I could to straighten it.
It was a total pain in the ass.

Oh, and I just discovered that my handbrake does absolutely nothing at all, which is really annoying because if it worked I wouldnt have smashed the front end in the first place because I remember the handbrake being on. It was really stupid for the previous owners to neglect to mention that there is no handbrake, I wonder if they would have mentioned it if there were no brakes at all?

So now I need to fix the handbrake, im thinking either it needs adjusting or there are no back brakes at all?

it will still lurch forward with the handbreak on but not much ......but yea with out it can go 2metres as a friend found out when he hit his garage door........

must have been hilarious to watch though!

Im having some trouble with my handbrake, ...should I make this a thread in the tech section? I dont know
Anyway, My handbrake does pretty much nothing , I lifted the centre console today so that I could take up some slack with the adjusting screw. It was already adjusted almost all the way it could go, so I went the extra few mm with it and tested my handbrake, and its still no good.

What should I do next? The car has got a good amount (6mm) of brake pad left on the rear.

Im thinkin I might have to take it to a mechanic, but im afraid it will cost a ridiculous amount to fix.

Sounds like the cable is stretched too far. Might have to be replaced.

or alternatively you could go to autobarn or supercheap auto and buy a little doovey that attaches along your handbrake cable and takes up some tension

go up to the girl at the bench (well, the supercheap I go to only ever has girls, I like it <_< >_>)
and ask for a handbrake cable tensioner, she might not know what the hell you are talking about, but in that case, she would call over her boss, and they would now what you are talking about. and they will take you down the aisle to where it is.

what does the handbrake operate? does it just operate the main rear brakes? or is there a seperate little brake??

If i get that little 'thingy' tensioner thing where would be the easiest place to put it? Like minimum dismantling of things?

That must be some strong shit u12sr20.

Yes the handbrake does only act on the rear brakes. I'm not sure where you'd put those tensioners though, it's been too long since I was last under a U12.
