Learning about cars basics?
« on: Nov 10, 2005, 11:44AM »
Sorry if this in the wrong forum. But I know very little about the mechanics of a car, only that cars vroom and that dodge vipers look sexy. Is there anywhere I can start to learn bit by bit of cars? I know each cars different but I mean there must be a common components that each car has (like a computer).

Lets assume I know shit for all about cars, anyone got any good websites as to learn about them?

Not in the For Sale forum doofus :P (Hmm needs movage, chop chop admins :P)

I personally learn by playing. Even just doing little alterations to a car and reading on things, you'll learn a lot. Knowing basic things helps you understand more complex stuff.

mechanics is seriously a "learn by doing" process.  you can read books, but until you're actually getting the grease and oil on your hands, you won't truely understand.

however as a supplement, forums like these are excellent.  look in things like the performance and maintenance sections to pick up little tips, and gradually as you start to tinker with the car, you'll realise the what and why of cars and car mechanics.

if you look at the "HELP, MY CAR WON'T START!@!!!" (or something similar) threads, thats usually a pretty good start, as a process of reverse engineering.  by dsicovering why something isn't working and then fixing it, you conversely discover how it works.

yeah, i agree with siltara. Look at what's said in the 'technical discussion' forums. From there you can probably work out who you should/shouldn't listen to on here, as well.

I learned by
a) asking _lots_ of stupid questions.
b) howstuffworks.com and places like that

I would also recommend if you've got the space buy a cheap clapped-out datsun* bluebird(or similar)
. Pull it apart. Ring up your friendly neighbourhood scrap metal dealer when you're done.

* I suggest a Datsun because they're cheap and Datsun and Nissan are the same company, so you can get an idea of what the engineers and designers were thinking.
