LED tail lights

Was poking around the forum, and couldn't find it via search, so I thought I'd hazard creating a new thread.  :D

I'm interested in modding my spare set of tail lights and turning them into LED strip tail lights, similar to these;

Wiring that up by hand would be a massive pain, not to mention time consuming, so is there any place that sells kits with this sort of crap in mind? If not I guess I've got myself a project over the summer holidays. :D

Disassemble the LED strips? Had a look and they seem awfully high current (2A per meter), but nothing that'd trip a fuse. Just gotta figure out how I'm going to wire them up, then give it a shot.

I'm thinking of running, and just wiring up a bunch seperately to the old globe positions. My only concern is that this wont give me the effect I'm after...

I would use some Perspex with holes drilled in the format you want. That way you get bright spots and glow around. Then mount them in the lens assembly.

Didnt think of that - cheers Colby. But with how densely packed i want the LEDS, i think theres going to be too much light leakage between the leds. Ill have a play with it and mock up a quick one in the coming weeks, but i think to get the effect im after i may need to use a thick peice of steel and drill the crap out of that, and use a clear lens with coloured leds. Ive never done any metalwork before though. This could be interesting. ;D

steel will be overkill.  maybe aluminium if you need something strong and stiff.
Actually, I just had a thought... make the sheet metal as the negative connection, so just bend the negative end of the LED's to touch the plate.  Then you just need to wire the positive wires.

True, very good point. What voltage goes to each tail light? I think what ill do id borrow that idea, set up a few leds and solder them in chains running as close to stock voltage as possible, then just link them up as parallel....

no just the lights, and the SMLED strips are not as good as the other ones. i found that the coloured led gave a 'ritcher ' colour than the white .

Does anyone have the relevant page in the FSM to the wiring loom for the tail lights?

I see two ground leads and 3 12v, going to 4 lights? =/

Been awhile since looking at the u12 lights, as i have the r32's in mine. but if i remember correctly the 4 bulbs will be 2 brake/park bulbs, reverse and indicator.

From memory the two green ones are brake and park. Black is the ground.
