Title: U13 SSS - stock speaker sizes?
Post by: Budgie on Jul 29, 2009, 12:45PM
Just wondering what they are guys?

6x9's in the back?

5x7's in the front doors?... splits in the case of my car, with 'premium sound' pack including amp'ed rear speakers and factory tweeters mounted in the A pillars.

Looking to upgrade soon, just need to know what size to buy!

Yeh, 5x7 in the front - I'm fairly sure 6's will fit without too much hassle. And 6x9 in the back if the covers are rectangles (mine are only 6" with square covers).

5x7... hummm

I'm not sure if I want to go with a sub or not, probably amp'ed front splits and amp'ed 6x9's for bass out back.

What do you think Jello? I'm looking to save boot space as its my reliable daily drive.

Sub's just weigh her down budge!!!

6x9's should be enough to keep you happy... I'm normally fine with just 6" - although I don't really listen to bass heavy music.

I'd just get a decent 4 channel amp like you said and mount it to the back of the rear seats (can be a bit tricky in the u13's).

I'm not putting a sub in our new U13. I'm going to try and put a 4x100WRMS amp with high level inputs under the passenger seat using the standard head and quality 6x9s in the back a 6" splits in the front. Only had a 300W amp on my sub in the old one, so I'm hoping the power should be much the same, but far clearer... hopefully.

Standard headunit?  Its pos! No shock protection for CD's... although it does play CD-R's

Yeah but I like the stockness... I was considering putting a indash 6 stacker MP3 out of some other car at some stage down the track, but the stock one will do for now.

Sounds fair enough.

I'm going the other way, fitting a single DIN unit (not chosen yet) and installing the sunglasses holder from a U13 LX into the second DIN slot for more storage space.

If you wanna enjoy yr sound system, definitely 6" splits in the front (+sound deadening in front door for better mid bass and lesser rattling), a 12" sub, any half decent rear speakers and a decent Head unit (pref with 3 RCA outs for future expansion). Head units are cheap now. You can even buy a decent 4 channel amp, run the front speakers off the ch 1 & 2 and bridge 3 & 4 to run the sub.

I like all things round (hmmm......), hence I'll avoid all 6x9 or 5x7 etc. :)
But seriously, rounded speakers produce better sound quality with less distortion.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. :)

FYI, I've tried running just 6 x 9" in front door, it fits but it's lot of work and the low bass is just missing.

Hummmm.

I'm not sure if I want to go with a sub this time. We shall see...

Ok guys, got my JVC KD-R805 installed... hands free bluetooth all working well with the mic hidden up at the A pillar/windscreen join.

Now its speaker time...

I don't want to go all out and spend much on this, the money is better saved and spent on the U12 ;).  I've decided to just got with speakers and no amp or sub at this stage.  I'm looking at a pair of 6x9's to go in the factory 6x9's spot in the back and a pair of 5x7's to go in the same factory sized spot in the front.

My only question is this.  The U13 SSS has the factory 6 speaker setup, amp'ed... etc.  The front speakers are amp'ed as well, or at least connected through the amp's that hang under the rear parcel shelf, as they would not work until those amps were turned on. Will running a set of 5x7" 2-ways in the front doors, connected directly to the stock wiring be bad? Seeing as the front speaker wiring splits somewhere to send high/low freq's to the A pillar tweeters and the door speakers.

I want to get away with speakers for about $220-$240 (seems possible after some research).

Shouldn't be an issue using the factory amps. If your concerned grab a multimeter and test the ohms on the stock speaker. 95% sure it'll be 4 ohms so your safe there. As long as the crossover doesn't happen on the speaker before it's sent to the tweeter you'll be fine.

For what it counts I agree with Kranz? ;)

Although really budge? It takes less than 15 minutes to run new speaker wires, and I can't imagine the stock amps doing a lot in terms of sound quality. They're just dead weight negatively impacting on your fuel economy :D

Sorry Paul, that did sound shit!  I didn't mean it like that mate.

Anyway, I've gone on your advice :P Got a pair of kicker 6x9's today and a pair of cadence 5x7's.  6x9's magnet rubs on the boot's springs, but its all good (much bigger magnets than the stock clarion gear!).  5x7's fit with a small amount of sanding/grinding back of the plastic mount that attaches to the door.  All 4 original speakers were FUCKED, cone was not connected to the edge of the speaker anymore, on ANY of them!

Anyway, sounds pretty good for $184 all up running off the headunit and is a pretty easy install in a U13 with the premium sound pack. Stock tweeters are still doing a good job as well.  All good :)

Pic of fucked original 5x7's and new 5x'7's

Bit late, but yeah it'll be fine.

With the new head unit you'd probably be better off binning the factory amps. From memory they're 35w max things (no idea of their RMS ratings) so they'd be pumping out less power than your head unit would.

It might sound a bit weird having the 2 sets of tweeters (one in the pillars, one on the new speakers in the doors). Try disconnecting the pillar tweets and see if the stereo image improves. It won't cause any damage to leave them plugged in.

And it is fine to run the speakers off the standard speaker wiring since you're not pushing heaps of power through them. The factory speaker wires are simply wired in parallel to the factory front tweeters and woofers; i.e. there is no crossover in the factory speaker wiring.
