GUAGES???!!!
« on: Mar 5, 2006, 02:47PM »
I've got a executive model u12 pintara, and just pillar mounted a 3 3/4 inch tacho it looks sick and was so easy. I also have a vacume/boost guage, that was'nt so easy, just left of the instrument dash there is a little rectangle piece of plastic with a nissan logo on it, I had to take that out, attack the dash with a file to fit the guage in, then mounted the guage in a seperate piece of plastic to cover up the dirty great hole in the dash. looks good now that it is finished, I'll get some pics as soon as possible. ;D

sounds good man.... tho i'm still wondering about the reason for the need of vaccum/boost guage....

NOTE: i'm assuming that u just hav a stock u12.... perhaps u've turbo'ed it.... but i dare-say u haven't.... prove me wrong (for ur sake)

the tacho is useful, but the vacume guage is mainly for show, does help with fuel/air economy, vacume guages used to be installed into older cars (VB COMMODORES as such) for that reason, they are also known as an economymeter. :)

Well it gauges the economy by measuring how far your foot is on the throttle and showing it on a dial of course! Hence showing you your (lack of) fuel economy.

It's majorly pointless IMO, I already know how far my foot is down... I can tell where it is all the way from a fairy's fart right through to "watch the fuel gauge drop" :P

the vacuum gauge shows how much vaccum there is going to your fuel regulator. if you have a manual it will show you which gear is better to cruise in. other than that it is pretty much for show, sort've like an n/a boost gauge.

I have no idea how you have a boost gauge in a n/a car... let alone one that is only "sorta for show"...

I can tell you that right now.
5th gear on flat road at speeds over 60km/h.

The only decent use for a vacuum gauge is trouble shooting engine performance. If i remember correctly, a fluttering vac gauge at idle usually indicates damaged valve seats/weak valve springs.

I have a plain Autometer one, shows -30hg to +20psi. It sees from around -22hg (severe decelleration) to 15psi. Well suited :)

If the guage is just a vac guage in an n/a thats cool. I like boost/vac guages, the way they flicker and move around all the time and in response to throttle is fun to watch.

Hah perhaps, though I can understand why it would assist people in driving more economically

Thought for forced induction cars, it can help with tuning and bost adjustments too. So they're not entirely rice.

Some of the old 910 Bluebirds had vac guages instead of a tacho... they had bands on them which represented economy levels so as mentioned, you could attempt to keep the guage in the middle somewhere and get better fuel economy.

Looks nice... just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to far to the side to be useful.

Maybe u should use one of those A-Pillar type plastic surrounds that puts the gauges on an incline?

Parallax will render the readings useless.... unless ur a passenger  ::)

Budgie and I were discussing this and i think they have different plugs from memory. Unless your car was a Ti with climate control a lot of dicking around needs to be done to get it to work.

1. Can see them, not clearly, from the driver's side. It's more for passenger entertainment :P
2. Already had them in the pillar before in the black stanza I had, was bad because I couldn't see around left turns that great (pic included).
3. Dunno about the climate control, but I know I have A/C and it works :) :P

4. It's Oil Pressure, Vac/Boost (I have no turbo, probably never will) and Air/Fuel Ratio.

So you obviously think that as a bare minimum that Oil pressure and Water temp aren't even needed? After all they monitor the 2 most important variables in an engine.....
