The Right Fuel...
« on: Nov 12, 2002, 12:58AM »
Hey guys. I was wondering about fuel and what you guys use. Recently the Queensland government and some fuel vendors have been implementing a fuel called Ethanol10, or Unleaded fuel with 10% Ethanol. I don't know any particulars about this, except that it reduces fuel economy by about 2% and can drastically reduce the life-span of your engine, if you continue to use it. Are the other states using this fuel? (I know SA isn't). Also, what's the deal on Premium Unleaded fuel like BP Ultimate 98? Does it give you more power / econ and burn cleaner, or is it just a gimmick?

I don't think the Ethanol 10 is being sold in Vic, but i was always under the impression that ethanol was good, as it's alcohol (much like methanol).
I noticed that my car runs a *tiny* bit better on optimax, damn stuff is too expensive.

For a good review Mitza go here: http://www.autospeed.com/A_0429/page1.html

As you will read, for a performance car it can add power, on our cars I think its more about protecting / cleaning the engine there maybe small gains in power / economy.

I use BP Ultimate [98 Octane] now. I used to use Optimax religiously since it came out a couple of years ago...

i have tried just about all of them at one time or another and dont really notice much difference at all. I did notice the Caltex one (whatever it is) made my car better on fuel.
I just put $10 worth of BP ultimate in tonight, i will give that a go, i dont think i have tested it b4.

I tend to get better fuel economy out of PULP. I dont know how much you will notice with just $10 worth though. I would get about 30 - 50 kms extra per tankful [55 litres] using PULP in typical city driving as compared with UL.

Also, unless your tank is dead empty there will be a mix of fuels in there...I think to test properly you need to go through at least 2 FULL tanks worth! Check this thread for fuel testing...Fuel Ecomony
