SR20DET Oil Problems
« on: Sep 30, 2013, 07:05PM »
I ran into a major problem few days ago in my SR20det. While driving i heard a knocking sound and some weird noise from around the main pulley area. I pulled over and the noise kept getting louder. So i towed my car home and opened the valve cover to see the reason for the knocking sound. Turns out my cam caps are burnt out due to no oil lubrication. The funny part is that the area most affected is closest to the oil feed entry while the furthest is least affected. Some background to the problem.

One day earlier i pulled out my oil pan (both upper and lower) to fix oil leaks. i also pulled out the front cover (with oil pump) and cleaned out both oil pan and front cover. Both items were assembled and filled fresh oil 10w-30. However the oil pump was not primed prior to install so we took out the oil filter and feed oil from oil filter area. After few attempts of cranking oil started to pump upto the filter and also the cam area.

I am including pics/ links for reference. Appreciate some assistance.

Hey :)dart_m  :) Bummer dood >:( similar prob other day but not so bad  :) Cam Caps are still on !?! If u are talking on cam Lobes take of the top feed turn over and clear with a staple or pin alike :) there should be two holes per lobe,They will splash oil all places! If u have a spare top cover cut out like a key keeping spark plug channel so u can keep oil out of plug holes  :D Cause they can get filled. Key end is over chain gasket sitting one bolt .or just cut chain piece out & cardboard day manifold gasket packing :) & can run easy to see oil run out:) If the oil is comming up at all!?! I have only had cam lobe oil drama. & was able 2 catch problem as arrived:) hope helps. & hope that's all the damage done:) Cheers RK91
