attach oil filter to block ca20e auto
« on: Aug 22, 2015, 11:08AM »
I cant seem to find anything on this.

My 1991 auto u12 ca20e has an oil cooler attached behind the oil filter.  It was leaking so i removed it.  I was going to leave it off and just screw the oil filter to the block as i don't 'think' i need it particually, but there is no screw.

I have a feeling that it might screw off but im not game to put force on it.

Anyone have any idea?

Also, know if the oil cooler is stock? No one can tell me anything about it and i cant get new seals for it.

Could be an aftermarket cooler for the auto.  Before doing away with it check to see if there is a factory oil cooler or a  place where the factory cooler should be...  You will want an auto box oil cooler...

Don't think you can post pics until you are a junior member though I could be wrong!

Do a web search for a factory service manual and if available download it. This will be really helpful in sorting things out and diagnosing problems.

Otherwise buy one.  I paid $12 for mine on ebay - came as a CD.  Best $12 spent on the TRX!

I dont have the ca20e engine so I wont be much help to you though others on the forum seem to be hard wired to Wikipedia or something as they have in depth knowledge and experience!

Hope you get it sorted.  Nothing more frustrating than messing under cars trying to track down bizarre issues! ;D

finally got the picture up

ha. for sure I have been reading some post, really helpful.

yea, this is a bit frustrating because I cant do anything there accept leave it on, cant put a sandwitch plate there, cant use a relocation kit and cant seem to find out anything about this part.  I do have a workshop manual on the way.

OK thanks for the pic.  I should learn how to do that... (Something about old guys and computers)

Definitely needs to be something there.  Oil coolers are there to stop things overheating.  I don't think you will get away with blanking it off.  Search fleabay for a cheap after market cooler that will mount to that fitting.

Sorry I can help you more than that.

Thats awsome, unfortunately i already paid for one  ;D

Still a bit stumped though.

My seals guy said he cant get any for my oil cooler and ive been searching wreckers with no luck.  Even if i found one though i still cant get seals.

I was hoping to buy an updated oil cooler but cant find an adapter for that 'T'.

That spout sticking out from the block does unscrew. If you can find the correct size threaded tube you could replace it with that and screw the filter straight onto the block.

What kind of seal is leaking on the cooler? If it's a paper gasket and you can't find a replacement you could cut one from a sheet of gasket paper. If it's an o-ring you might be able to find an oil filter with the correct size o-ring and use that.

All auto CA20 Pintaras came with the cooler from factory.

Oh great. Its a relief to hear it does screw off.  Unfortunately its the bigger internal seal. I would like to stay stock but a new cooler might be the way to go.  Thanks.

So I've purchased and installed a new transmission cooler but couldn't help but to notice that it doesn't connect at the oil filter.  I think what I need is an "oil cooler".  Lol.  I'm pretty sure the stock one oil only.  Brand new transmission cooler definitely can't hurt as it looks like it actually has no stock "transmission" cooler. Anyone making this replacement.  "Oil" cooler.

Yep, you need a factory CA20E oil cooler if you want to go that way.

Alternatively you could make a threaded tube to screw into the block instead of the existing spout to eliminate the oil cooler.

No 'universal' aftermarket parts will help you.

If it was me I'd be repairing or replacing the old one.

All auto U12s have a factory transmission cooler built into the radiator that transfers heat from the transmission fluid to the coolant.

Ok.  Did notice it goes through the radiator. Does both now.  Car runs a bit cooler...
Not sure what I'll do.
I was hoping that spout would screw off to reveal a screw type fitting but you say it won't... I can't really have it off the road for long enough to make a new spout and it's leaking pretty bad. I have been searching, Im not much good sourcing parts.
Do you think I could unscrew the spout from my manual parts car and put it on the auto then use a sandwich plate.  Will the spouts unscrew or do you think they will break out and I'll need to tap and die?
