Ca20e Mods
« on: Jul 30, 2003, 05:15PM »
Hello peeps :) im from the R31 Skyline Club  and i was browsing around and found this place.... pintara mod heaven....  ;)

ca20e moding over there is quite rare since they can get much more out of there rb20/30's n ca18's  however i didn't exactly want to buy a new engine after just getting the car. As you can imagine info on this engine is a little light and i wasn't getting much help, simple fact is no one knows all that much about em over there.

I own a 87 white GLI manual, and im willing to spend between 1 and 2 thousand dollars... maybe. So far im still doing maintenance on the car... putting in bosch super 4 plugs this weekend and leads next week (any suggestions?).

A few questions. (1)Advancing the timing. now the STD (or at least mine) ca20e is set to 4 T.D.C, exactly how far should i advance this, i still want it to be able to run on Normal ULP without pinging even though ill be using BP Ultimate most of the time. (2) has any one else had problems with cracking spark plugs ? im pretty sure mine only cracked from former abuse but even so it's quite rare on any car, should i get cold plugs ?. (3) Just how big is my engine lol you may think this funny but i really don't know if it's a 2.0 or a 2.4 leter car... no where have i seen it stated and sadly i don't have the manual for her.

people normally get shitty when we suggest the search feature of the forums, but its really handy. there is a thread in the faq section regarding nissan engine model numbers.. basically the prefix (in your case CA) is the engine family, the numbers in the middle are the displacement and the suffix (in your case E) refers to cams & ignition etc.. so a CA20E is a CA series engine which is 2 litres & has electronic ignition.

as far as mods to your car goes, go the usual pod filter, extractors, exhaust & then throw in a cam too.. that'll get you around the 90kw mark, possibly more up from your stock 79kw.. after that look into an aftermarket chip, such as a power chip.. all up that'll easily chew thru your $2k.

as for leads, see if you can get top gun 8 or 10mm leads.

yer noss is offering a cam grind for 120 bucks so long as u provide a cam, i'm probably getting it done in the next couple of weeks

the "d" part in "de" stands for dual over head cam? or double over head cam? something like that so no it wouldnt change it to a ca20de.  You still have a single cam only it is reground.

What was the differance between the CA20E in the R31 pintaras, and the CA20E in the U12 pintaras?  Other than RWD and FWD...

I know there's a power difference (the U12 CA20E is 83kW, the R31's CA20E is 78kW), and don't they use a different intake manifold also? (do the u12's also have 'Nissan EGI' on them)

I'm running a good old '31 Pintara as well, '88 GXE auto, reliable enough cars, but lacking in the balls department.

i can get cams done for both the ka24e and ca20e.. there are 2 options for the ka24e, and i think 2 or 3 options for the ca20e.

ca20de  :-X hahaha, we all wish.  Yeah what Noss described you will notice heaps of power gain with all of those mods.  I think many people underestimate the potential of the ca20e mainly because most people opt for more common cars and engines, its a fairly unmodified known engine, i prefer it that way i think, the only problem is, is that you have to search for your options a bit more cuz not many people know about it.

Best luck with the mods champ,  ;D

Apparently the CA20 is not modifed much due to having a weak block and poorly flowing head. CA18 on the other hand....the complete opposite.

I don't say this often at all but......unless the CA20 has a block as strong as the KA and has been proven to do so, unless you're going for forced induction, well, i'd put the money into an engine swap.

The KA24E and DE block has been proven to sustain high levels of power both in street/drag forms with forced induction with forged rods & pistons, and very little work to the stock crank.

with the r31 pintara, its so easy to swap the engine too as plenty of people have done it before.. you have good options too.. all in the rb family of engine.. lots of power to be had.. it just all depends on if you think it would be worth swapping the engine or not.

Yeah, SSGTR, i heard also that the CA18 has a tougher block than the SR20...Whether its true or not...
$4500 Pintara, you get what you pay for....an iron horse with not brilliant potential.

I have a bluebird trx, running a ca20P (imported carby ca20 with higher compression and hydraulic tappets) that i have converted to EFI, making it a CA20PE???
anyways, im wondering what size exhaust is adviseable because im getting it done soon (i dont need a CAT :D).
Also does anyone know where i can get a pod filter mount that screws onto the AFM off a pintara, I've made a mount, but its only temporary

Cheers, Alan.

2" is what you should get, some people have 2.25 i believe, but the ca20 is only a small engine & if you go any larger there wont be enough back flow/pressure for the engine to run to properly, in other words go over 2" and you will lose power.

There is a adapter that fits but im damed if i can remember witch car its from.

if your using the same afm from the u12 ca20 then you need an adaptor from a r31 skyline/vl commodore

no they're not unfortunately.. u12 pintaras, and i'm pretty sure r31 pintaras both use mafs (hotwire type) rather than the trapdoor afm style.. it didnt really click earlier that you might actually have the older mechanical style unit. jayjay might know what adaptor will fit if he ever fitted a pod to his gazelle.

just for the benefit of other people on the forums, the ca20e u12's use an r31/vl maf adaptor, the ka24e uses an sr20 maf adaptor.

can you get a photo up of the afm? maybe someone might be able to help you out easier with the aide of a photo?

ok, if i get a hotwire style AFM, is it compatable with this computer, or are they different? if so can i pick up a new computer coz i cant mount the trapdoor at the angle it needs to be in the bluey and it dont read right if its not the right way up!!!
cheers
