R31 Skyline Help
« on: May 12, 2004, 05:32PM »
Hey guys, the site is goin great!
Considering gettin an R31, the ones ive been looking at are a 1989 Model with the donut tailights (i feel like an absolute idiot) ive got a few questions...

What model(s) came with an LSD in Manual Transmission?

What series is the model i have previously talken about?

Did all the R31 (other than GTS/GTSR/GTSX) models come with an RB30?

Is it an RB30DE?

Would the import headlights fit straight in?they look like they have a projector, if so how hard is the wiring?

Would a GTS-X/GTS-R Front Bar fit straight on?

Thanks heaps to anyone who replies, any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers, Tim.

ok firstly they are callled hotplate taillights

hmmm lsd and 5 speed ud be looking at a silhouette

the hotplates come on series 3 skylines only

All the aussie ones came rb30e (NOT DE)

the gts-x and gts-r came with rb20det

the GTS (4 door) did come with a rb30e but larger cam and a few extra things

the projector headlights do fit straight into the series 3 front and the wriring is easy.

gts-x (and r) front bars do fit straight on but for the price u r gonna pay for one its probably better to get an aftermarket one.

silo manuals arnt rare that is true. but try to find one that isnt raped is the hard task. the lsd is easy to fix but ud be lucky to see change out of 900 for a rebuild lsd.

Its not only the lsd that makes the silo differant. sure some people have put a lsd in an exec but it doesnt make it a silo. The price ur gonna pay to get a exec into a silo, its cheaper to buy a silo.

The interior is much nicer on the silo and also the ti. The ti version has more features than a silo (ti is luxury, silo is ports).

best bet is if ur really stuck, find a series 2 silo (much easier to find) and convert the rear to hotplate tail lights. very easy to do. If u want to go all out fit a series 3 front on a series 2 silo and there ya go. parts for a series 3 are around 700 bucks. have seen many sries 2 silos with series 3 hotplat taillights.

900 an LSD rebuild damn how much for a secondhand one? I just got a silo s3 dont know that much about all the other ones. But the silo has a heaps nice interior e.g descent bolstered seats, cloth trim, descentish steering wheel, plus oil pressure, volts, guages and mine has a trip computer which still actually works but i dunno if all thats standard features. pretty nice car though

i payed 2800 but its been raped i think the term is.+already spent another grand on it If i didnt want to heavily modify it e.g replace half the car then i would be pissed of that i bought but i still lover 'er. Cars obviously thrashed trans and diff are on their last legs yet the engine is tight as barely uses any oil and neva misses abeat that says how descent the engines are.

got more questions sorry to reply to an old post but i didnt think i should have started a new one

how much am i lookin at for a series 3 silo?

will the gts grill fit on?

what would be the best engine conversion for money, performance and reliability RB20DET, RB30DET or RB25DET?

Will a bonnet for a coupe fit on to a sedan?

are carbon fibre bonnets illegal in australia?

now for the really weird question.

what is the length between the front wheel and the rear wheel (so i can find some skirts that will fit it)?
is it the same as the coupe?

Okay.....

1. I paid $5,000 for mine and it's pretty great, haven't had trouble with it in the 6 months that I've owned it

2. Yes

3. probably RB25DET, though you'd be getting fairly good value from throwing a turbo onto the stock RB30

4. Not sure......maybe

5. Dunno

6. The wheelbase is 2610 mm, but you should go measure it

carbon fibre bonnets are legal in australia.
with the bonnet from the coupe. I always thought a coupe had a basic series 3 front (well bonnet grille lights) so i always thought they were interchangable

POVR31: Trip computers are standard on the silo. But yes the interior is much nicer than a gx or gxe.

Whats the diffence? s3 have from what ive seen almost identical bonnets. why waste ur money on something that people wont know is different. u gotta get the bonnet then spray it. its a big thing too. not cheap to get a new bonnet. stick with the standard one. ur money could best be spent elsewhere.

U gotta have a series 3 for the import bonnet to fit.

Quote

who knows. again, couldnt your money be better spent. it doesnt weight that much.

no why would they be. They are much lighter then normal bonets and just as strong. very legal.

dont get a GTS grille. they look gay. its the same as a normal grille excpet it has GTS written on it. go the ti honey combe grill. looks the best.

as far as engine conversions go. it depends how much money u wanna spend. rb25det would be orgasmic, but they are not cheap. my PERSONAL opinion for the sky would be a rb20det...only problem is parts for them, aparently its a bitch of a engine to get parts for. rb30et......been done over heaps...but for the money it costs to do it PROPERLY, dosnt too me seem worthwhile...unless ur doin ALL the owrk yourself.

carbon fibre bonnet yes are illegal......

parts for rb20det are plentyfull. all the r32s have them (except gtr) and parts are easy to come by. rb25det conversion is about 5500 while u can see change from 2 grand for a rb20det conversion.

hmm there have been many people pass through inspections with them so they seem to be legal in SA

The ser3 bonnet will fit a ser 1/2 R31, but you do need a few extra things like;
ser3 lights,
ser3 bonnet (a given :P)
and the ser3 bonnet latch, or you can Mod your ser1/2 latch somehow  :-\

R31 skylines from S1 and S3 can be interchangble with each other as a proud owner of a 31 skyrine Ti i have conveted my block taillites to S3 hotplates and the wiring but u must have the S3 garnish to compleat the S3 upgrade

R31 GTSR's came out with the RB20DETR made for the group A racing and in race trim had 400hp

S3 and the Import R31 can be interchangble
