I think they plug into your computer the power supply looms for your drives. Are these ment to be going in your car or computer?

Thats what i thought, looks like theyve been in a computer, just cut the plugs off and wire it through a switch or headlights, or both. how much do you need to know? theres only 2 wires.

lol thats another possible option but that will come later, if ever :P

i can see 5 wires though 1 red 2 black and 2 yellow lol! so do both of the yellow go to the positive and both of the black go to ground? what do i do with the red wire? haha thanks

I cant tell how serious you are so ill give you a serious answer. There should only be 2 wires coming out of the neon, one is earth and one is posative. its only been wired up to the plug so it can be plugged into a computer, cut the 2 wires off from the piece of loom with the 2 plugs on it and thow the plug loom away. I cant write it any more simple than that.

Sigh....

Please stop giving this kid bad advice....

These are computer Neons... and from what he has said and what i can see, they arent neons.... they are CCFL's.

There are 4 Pins on them for a reason - 12, 5 and Ground. On the pic that shows the circuit board you can see it uses all 3.

Now im assuming it uses the 5v connection for a control source. Hence it wont work with a car unless he can tap into a 5v source.

Now the ccfl uses a high voltage AC source. Hence why there are 2 WHITE wires coming out of them going to the converter. You cant supply 12v DC to it, it wont work.

Check your power source on the PC and make sure 12 5 and ground are Yellow red and black respectively.
If thats the case, you're out of luck, unless you want to see if you can splice to a 5V source anywhere in your car.... which i wouldnt reccommend because i would assume it would be used for something like the ECU... which i wouldnt want to compromise for some piddly neon glow.

Get a dc converter to get your 5v requirement, or goto Autobarn or jaycar and buy some automotive grade neons.

Ed, not sure if we're looking at the same pictures here?

I agree that they're CCFL's you can see the transformer box in the top on the second picture. If you have a look at that same picture of the plugs, only the +12v and ground are taken from the "plug and play" harness for the computer, there's no +5v taken from it as far as I can see.

I've got CCFL's in my boot atm, +12v and a ground for the transformer box is all you need (my transformer does 2 cold cathodes per box).

I'm fairly sure I have the same neon for my computer, was free from a friend.
but it does only have two wires off the neon, the extra wires are only because you can run another power cable from it. like daisy chaining.

Just cut the cables as close to the plug as possible and wire it to a switch. throw a fuse on for good measure.

ok checked all details on them today, they are indeed ccfl's and do have a small transformer box that runs to a switch and then onto those two plugs i'll go check out your idea a bit later jello otherwise i'll probably take eurisko's advice and just buy some proper auto neons

these are the same as the ones i have in my boot, theyre a slighly different shade of blue to a normal automotive neon that you get at autobarn, and they give off heaps less light.

cut them off at the plug dale, red and black test them on the battery, that is assuming they are exactly the same as the ones i have, the ones i have are from jaycar and have the same plug, aslong as the two run together then it will work.

this is assuming that they are the identical model to mine.

ok guys the thread can finally end, i am not as dumb as i may look cos i had originally tried them on the battery with ground and 12v tested them today at school, the ccfl's themselves were faulty, so got another pair and just tested them, they work ;D so i should be installing them later 2nite or tomorrow thanks for all of your help guys!
