Oil
« on: Sep 12, 2005, 06:04PM »
What oil does everyone run in their U13s?
Got my car serviced last week and my mechanic put 5w30 synthetic oil in and now my car feels like its running much better.
Seems like he knows his stuff as i've heard from other U13 owners that they run better on slippery oil.
Give it a try next time you do an oil change :)
Cheers.

I usually run 10w40 or 15w40 depending on time of year.
I think of it this way, during summer the temp it quiet high so oil will be runnier therefore need slightly thicker oil, and in winter vice versa. Ofcourse in Aus there isnt really a winter  :D

I'm using Castrol magenetic 10W-30 (semi-synthetic) I think. Nothing fantastic about the oil, might be switching to Mobil 1 10W-30 fully sync.  Which brand of oil do u guys use, is it semi-sync or fully sync? How about some reviews of the oil. Sorry for the hijack Alister :)

I was using castrol formula R 5W30 full synthetic until my car hit 210000. I've now changed over to castrol magnatec 10W40, mainly because it's cheaper...... I've noticed absolutely no difference.

oil viscousity should be at least in part, dependant on weather. Ka-Bluey summed it up quite nicely.

In a KA24E or DE you should be using oil in the following ranges.

5w-25                                   }
5w-30                                   }  Cold Weather - <0deg C - 25deg C
5w-40                                   }

10w-30                                     }
10w-40                                     }
10w-50                                     }
15w (yes, it is only 15w)              }  Weather between 10deg C and 35deg C
15w-40                                     }
15w-50                                     }
15w-60                                     }
20w-40                                     }

20w-50                                                                 }
20w-60                                                                 } Hot Weather - averages over 30deg C
25w-60                                                                 }

Do not use 25w-70 as in Shell Sport 50 unless you're one of those people who insist on cruising at 5000rpm and redline every gear off of traffic lights. It is too thick otherwise. Trust me - I've used it.

Last year, i had my head removed and reconditioned buy a mechanic in adelaide when my head gasket blew. He was an ex-Nissan mechanic and told me that you should never run anything thicker than a 10 weight oil (eg 10W40) in engines like the KA24DE / SR20DE. He pointed out to me why, showing me the size of the oil feed holes that deliver oil to the camshaft. These oil holes are absolutely tiny and he said that thicker oils can cause oil starvation problems, because the oil can't travel fast enough through these tiny capillaries (until the oil is bloody hot and thins out).
Most modern multivavle engines are like this apparently and hence the necessity for using thinner oil.

I used to use Mobil 1 5w50, but have switched to Shell Helix 5w40.  Not much difference there in performance for me but I go Shell Helix 5w40 as it is cheaper then Mobil 1 5w50 by about 15 bucks!  I only use fully synthetic engine oils as I have read somewhere that they dont 'burn' as easily and leave a residue in the car making them cleaner which equates to running better.

I reject your reality and subsitute it with my own.....

Yeah my mechanic said something along the same lines and i've heard other mechanics saying the same thing (at least for the KA24DE).

I have heard this from a Nissan mechanic, who didn't really seem to know much of what was going on.

It says in the factory manual to use a range of engine oils from 5w20 to 20w60. I know the holes you're talking about but it's only with very thick oils that these holes pose a problem. At the nominal oil pressure of 4-5kg/mm^3 the smallness of these holes is not an issue at all, even with thicker oils. I have found the best oil to use on the KA's is Motul 15w50, but I have used nearly all grades of oil from 5w25 to 25w70 in the quest to find the best one. Personally the thinnest oil I would use is 7.5w/25, or you may end up experiencing oil pressure problems on the highway.

Currently I use 15w/50, with some kind of oil PTFE additive such as Nulon Engine Performance Treatment for best results. My engine has 304,000k on it and does not burn a smidgeon of oil, so I guess thicker oil than 10w is not really doing anything at all to my engine.

I used to use the castrol formula R 5W30 full synthetic like green bird, but switched to Castrol Mangnatec 10W-40.

Can pick it up for  around $28 per 5L on sale, and the engines been quite happy.  Same all year round.

I change my oil and filter every 5,000 km so a full synthetic oil can get a bit excy for an engine that doesn't demand it.

anyone read the latest Zoom Magazine, they reckon the generic nissan oil gives the most horsepower, its a pretty dodgy comparison they did though. They didnt review the castrol edge oils either, which is what I was hoping for.

Yeah, when I saw it on the front cover I thought how the hell are they gonna test that.

A relatively small Australian magazine just doesn't have the time or resources to do a decent motor oil comparison.

I use Valvoline synthetic 15W40 in my U13. I also use Nulon Longlife additive as well. I put it in all my engines and I reckon its worth its weight in gold.
