Painted my brake calipers!
« on: Jan 17, 2006, 09:01PM »
To cut a long story short my calipers where in the need of a rebuild so i thought while they were apart and clean i would give them a paint job.

I chose high temp aluminium paint and so far looks the goods. I was a bit worried after i painted the first one as it looked like it was really going to stand out, but once it was on the car with the wheels back on it actually looks really good and im happy with the job.

Here are some pics of the final job.

Tell me what you think.

Forgot to mention all in all i paid about $25 for everything for the job. Was an easy job really just time consuming. Basically i rebuilt the calipers so they were all apart.
In two pieces i just taped up what i didnt want sprayed...basically anything rubber and also plugged the holes for the brake lines and such. gave it all a good clean with petrol and a wire brush where i could (obviously not the rubber or the piston/dust seal) then painted it and left it to dry. If i had organised it better i would have hung it from some wire so that i could spray it and let it dry without touching it but had other things to do.

Basically just worked my way around all the wheels (car was on blocks) painting and regreasing and such then when i did all four wheels back to the first one to put back on the car. Worked well and the second coat of paint was dry. Gave it a was that night and paint was all good and three days later still no problems so im happy with that.

be prepared for them to turn black very quickly though mate! Brake dust is a bitch.
First a Silver TRX, then a White TRX...whats next? Game Boy-Clear style TRX?

Yeah i know mate, but hoping if i keep them clean they should be right. They survived the first wash without any dramas so hopefully i can keep them clean that way.

Cheers for the replys. Looks like the paint is surviving the heat and the wet with all the rain we had lately. Still looking clean aswell which is a bonus.

Looks sick, I want to do mine silver as well, the only thing is that they would go black from brake dust so damn quick.

I got the paint from Bunnings for around $15. Look for the high temp stuff not the engine paint.

As for keeping them clean just give them a quick wash when you do the car. Mine still look great and not black :)

my r31 callipers on the bluebird have been painted for nearly a year just make sure when you was the car wash the callipers.  do them last of course.

it does help if you have mags that allow acces to the callipers.
