yeh I'd be interested in what would be the best gearbox configuration for these cars,
I'm gonna get the car swapped to manual soon and would like to know what clutchs and things hold up best

standard gearboxes hold up allright up to about 14psi of boost, then they start to shit emselves, so a new gearset would be on the cards then.

as for clutches a super single or a twin plate is the only way to go or u'll be replacing clutches every year or two. i have an upgraded exedy clutch in mine but i have to replace it soon, been in for about 2 years at the moment.

Adelaide Clutch seem to have a very good rap from those that have them.

Since our gearboxes are essentially the same , ie rs5f50a/v , do these PAR gearsets fit ca18det or are advertised as such?
Whats the cost?

i'm getting a ppg straight cut syncro box

par was cheaper (probably $1000-$1500 cheaper) but i decided to go with ppg anyway. ppg box also includes upgraded 3rd/4th selector fork.

i still haven't got the box back yet :( cos ppg have had a massive backlog of work to get done apparently. i will be fairly annoyed if i dont have it back by around may 13 etc cos i'd like to put it back in that weekend.

the gearset is the gtir gearset which appears to be identical. however as the box builder is yet to receive the gearset, he cannot be 100% sure yet. both ppg and the builder however believe it's identical going from photos of internals.

i have to admit i was awefully tempted to throw a 2nd hand box in and just sell the car off, but upon thinking of another type of car to buy, nothing really apealed to me.

PAR was cheaper? How much is the PPG gearset? What type of warranty do they provide?

Hello
Its been a while...anyway just wanted to let you all know that my gearbox 'died' at the end of june. Its been off the road since...  >:( :( ;D 8) :-[ .Apparently it was a mainshaft bearing that broke and fell into a place that stopped selection of 1 and 2 gear.Think i did it dragging a gen3 ute... i rushed the 1-2 change(i think). Two weeks later i couldnt change gears :(. At least i 'KILLED' that pushrod... ;). Anyway the 'box is out now and hopefully its back on the road in 3-4 weeks. I thought that maybe putting crap tyres on it would help the driveline, but compromise handling. Good to read the new(old) replies, will try to stay in touch.

Hello again
Just a short note to say i finally got my car back after three and a half months...
its good to have wheels again, though i am considering selling it now because of the (relatively) fragile nature of the gearbox...
what do you guys out there think?
bye for now

Phreeky's PPG box is holding up good after 2500km from what I have heard.  Maybe take that option?

i've considered the ppg option and im'm now at the stage of having to choose between keeping the 'bird and spending up big on it,or just taking the plunge and going the r-32 gtr road.i'd like to keep the 'bird because it attracts no attention and gets 'the job' done-if you know what i mean...
the missus has a '95 180sx and there are so many meathead 'p' platers in commondores (not a typo) who hassle you.imagine what it'd be like in a gtr. any ideas or opinions would be welcome...

just thought of something else. 8) when the gearbox went,it was because of a bearing failure.even if i go for a ppg gearset, whats to say another bearing or the like wont die.i know thats the price i/we pay do drive hi-po cars, but it just makes me  :'( when it happens...by the way what have any of you heard of or know about the whiteline kits available for the u13 (the works as it was referred to in hpi  awhile back).
does anybody know what has happened to the mag 'speed'.i didnt think it was a bad read...

When gearbox bearings get worn, they die fast, especially with harsh treatment. I think its something to do with the torque on the shaft minutley twisting it. Bracing the gearbox and new bearings should make for a relativley strong box.
I havent heard of anybody stripping teeth on a rebuilt box yet...........

hello again
what is involved in 'bracing the gearbox'? also, what benefits can be gained from using high-quality trans fluids. what about oil coolers?
its great to have the old girl back on the road, but its got crappy 15" taxi-tyres on it (from the 'missus 180),so il'll have to change them back over soon.what does anybody know about those cheap wheel and tyre packages going around for about 1k?
see-ya soon

You can make an oil cooler system for the manual gearbox by building a filter, pump etc.. into the gearbox and using an engine oil cooler. I dont think this is nessacary in 95% of cases. Thinner oil (yet strong film) is best for launching , light shockproof oil is nice. Redline MT-90 has served me well ,ive launched that box so many times and its still going yet its syncro's are about done (they were when i got the car too). Bracing of the outer casing improves the gearbox'es strength markedly , i seriously doubt the hardness of the gearset is the problem , id say it could do with being harder, but not nessacarily 8x as hard like with a PPG gearset.

gearboxes break in a lot of different ways: teeth breaking, whole gears stripping, shafts breaking, cases cracking, lubrication issues, broken synchros, selector forks bending/breaking, hubs breaking, bearings failing/wearing.

take your pick

I guess 4wd boxes are principally more likeley to break. My guess is teeth break due to shaft twisting or worn bearing...... Id like to know whats the most common breakage for our boxes and cause...

well the break i had where a couple of teeth on second were broken off, all gearbox bearings were still perfect as were all shafts, and the casing too. it drove ok in other gears with a slight sound, and made a loud clicking sound in 2nd (and if i put my foot down in 2nd it probably would have ripped all the teeth off due to the shock force of jumping a couple of teeth in effect).

but yes 4wd boxes more likely to break, and regardless of teeth size also more likely to break than GTR boxes for example (a GTR even on a hard launche is still 4wd for a bit first so doesn't normally have the massive shock force involved, plus the front diff is open). it's gearboxes in Evos running slicks all round that are really shining through and showing their strength, but again they normally only last so long.

Personally i dont know if the evo boxes are all that mighty , ive seen a stock evo 6 blow one all over the ground on all standard gear, in the wet too.

The gearset you have now should be indestructable if all other things are sufficient...?
