Temperature Gauge Fluctuation
« on: Jul 8, 2006, 09:27PM »
I'm having trouble with my Atessa's temp gauge trembling and then rushing back to cold when she comes on boost after hard acceleration.

Does anyone know why this would be happening?

Should I be worried about it?

See if you can get your hands on a consult cable or display and see what it's reporting. This will help you isolate the problem (sensor, guage, etc.).

Clean the connection on the temperature sensor on your thermostat cover.

"Clean the connection on the temperature sensor on your thermostat cover"

Hi Jono

Thanks for the advice, but you're stretching my mechanical ability.

Where is it and what does it look like?

I'm not sure, you'd have to ask one of the SR20 boys. My car has a CA20...

Does anyone with an SR know where the temperature gauge sender is and can they take some photos of it?

there are two temp sensors in the u13 (sr20), both located on the drivers side rear of the engine (near the oil filter). they're relatively obvious once you take a good look back there, one for the gauge and the other for the ecu.

the gauge one i'm pretty sure is the outer (towards drivers side) one, iirc it's a single wire, changes its resistance to earth through its body depending on temperature.

mine was fluctuating at certain revs, the connection gets a bit weak (on the sensor itself, not the plug, it's a silly setup when you look closely), my fix is i've pulled the cable tight and cable tied it off so it stays tight, no more issues.

you can see the sensor plugs in http://www.clubpoint.net/bluebird/intake/Img_5370.jpg on the left, just above the oil filter
