Stock Thermo/radiator fans
« on: May 8, 2006, 03:15PM »
Just Need some information regarding the stock radiator/thermo fans in my attessa.

When do they turn on as i think i may have a problem with mine.

Do the fans turn on when the car is first started?

Do the fans turn on when the air con is turned on?

If not when do the fans switch on?

cant remeber exactly, will have a look at mine. they turn on according to the water temperature. im pretty sure they turn on when the a/c is on as well. if ur car has had a hard run before u turned off the car, then turn on the car, the fans will be on at the start. but they shouldnt be on if u left ur car overnight and its the first time turning on for the day...

The ECU switches them between off, low and high depending on vechicle speed, water temp and  A/C on/off. There should be a table in the FSM which details the operation of the fans.

the only times the fans will turn on are:
1: turn onto high when coolant temp reaches 96 degrees C
2: turn onto low when A/C is on

other than that they shouldnt turn on, all controlled by the ECU

they wont turn on when the air con is on and still didnt when the car reached nearly 3/4 temp.

looks like will just have to wire them to the ignition.

problem solved.

nah well maybe for now, but i wouldn't do it permanently mate

got a consult adaptor and software available? if so, slap it on and check the water temp reading - the water temp sensor might be reading a low level constantly even though the gauge is showing hot (there are two separate sensors, one for the gauage and one for the ecu) - so not only would it not turn the fans on, but it may constantly be running extra rich due to thinking it hasn't warmed up properly.

I don't recommend leaving them all the time either. It would take ages to warm up for start..

Where are you located? I got a consult display that will help diagnose the problem in minutes (coolant temp sensor, A/C relays and switches). It will even tell you when the ECU has triggered the thermos, so maybe hte problem lies with the thermo circuit itself..

If the thermostat is working properley it should not take any longer to warmup.
